4th Gear grinding

WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

My uncle called me a little while ago, the truck in his yard is identical to mine, but a '93, even has rotted brake and fuel lines . He says it doesn't have a single straight body panel, either.

I'm going to try to get the whole truck cheap since it was abandoned (or at least yank the motor/tranny from it). I'd like to get the front axles, too, just in case mine are noisy or something.
I just have to call NYDMV and see what they say about the legality of it. I don't want to get screwed because the former owner woke up deciding to get it back one day.
Hopefully this will work out and I won't get any more surprises with this thing... I'm feeling that same dumb excitement I felt when I got the truck and didn't know it was DOA...:surepal:
The dealer called me this morning and said he'd send the paperwork in today to get the title mailed to me. I don't know if I heard him right or not, but I think he said he has to sign my name on it. I have to call him later, if he's signing my name on it, I better be able to read the friggin document before he does anything with it and fax it back to him signed if I'm into it. The whole point of a signature is that I saw and approved the docs!

Really, electronically there isn't much to do, just change the PROM and re-wire the backup lights and neutral safety switch, but trust me on this one, it is MUCH easier to replace what you have than trying to swap in an auto.

I talked to a guy this morning who's trying to sell me a th400 and transfer case for my truck, I'm glad my uncle came through, or I'd start thinking about it...

Thanks for the responses guys!

registered letter?

A friend of mine who is self employed in his own garage has had several people bring him vehicles to fix, then they abandon them there, sometimes after he spent his own money on parts and his labor..some sat there over 5 years!--he hounded the owners to remove them, even without paying him for the repairs--several never came back, some moved out of state--he was stuck with them...

The law here is you have to send the last known owner of the vehicle a registered letter, return recepit required(they have to sign for it to ensure a witness sees they got it)--then,if no reply after 30 days,I believe the car is considered to be abandoned, and is turned over to whoever has possesion, usually a mechanic who has a lein on it...this makes it legal for the "new" owner to dispose of it--but without the title, its nearly impossible to junk them legally, and forget ever putting it back on the road again--no title--no way..

I hope laws in your state are different!--this guy has a 4x4 chevy truck that WAS a nice truck, but was abandoned there over 10 years ago,its scrap now--I wanted the SM465 setup from it,but he refused 300 bucks for it!--I would have sold the whole truck by now!--screw theese people who dump their problems on someone else and run! :screwy: :surepal:

all this talk of the Getrag transmissions, anyone know where i can find a rebuild manual for one? i've been searching the net for days and it seems like no one makes a repair manual....

Im sorry but I do not understand why people have a problem with a trans (like yours) and just want to buy a junkyard tranny (not knowing the condition of that tranny) instead of fixing theirs. We get customers all the time calling asking "do you sell trannies" and our response is "no but we can fix yours". Nothing is so bad that it warrants junking it and getting a whole other transmission. I have seen pleanty of trans that most would say are "toast" but they are all rebuildable. Yes the Getrag, all three designs, might not be the easiest to build, but a shop would do it for a couple hundred dollars labor and parts, fix the problem, all new bearings, synchros and seals, good as new. Buy a "replacement" and now you have to worry about its problems, when you could have spent the same amount and been good as new.

Anyway, one of their problems is they break the input bearing, and eat teh pilot bearing, pull the clutch, check the pilot bearing and input while its out.
