I have a 86 k30 dually bb 400/205 combo. If the light is not on is it in 4wd or is it possible it is and not illuminated? When the light is on I know its in 4wd but when its not on i am not sure. I thought when the 205 is in 4wd its in,period. But i am not so sure. Any ideas?

The light is only on in 4wd,I can here my bad front slipjoint when its on. I guess my question is if its possible to be in without the light?

I'd be for checking some things out if that is happening. Whether its the actual case issue or just the light indicator having issues.

Yes, the switch can fail. From my experiences with my 205's and the switch, they are somewhat fragile. Odd, pretty simple piece, but the movement they sense is pretty small, and they can easily "come out of adjustment".

The whole thing is essentially a ball bearing that rides on one of the shift rails, and that movement opens or closes the switch through a pin sticking out of it. Spring between the switch and the ball bearing to keep tension. Too much or too little movement (bad switch, spring, ball bearing, and so on) and the light won't work right.

Prolly GM, since the 205 switch is still out there. If they were *smart* it'd be the same switch as the 241, but this is GM we are talking about :)

I think I found the switch in Chevy Duty (Classic Parts of America). Sounds like its the correct switch. But the switch actually looks a lot like the reverse switch I replaced in my SM465. Maybe they are the same switch?

Having never dealt with the 208 stuff, can't comment. I do know that the early 465 and later 465 switches use entirely different connectors, and the later 205 4wd switch does as well.

You might be able to get the piece cheaper from gmpartsdirect or jim here on the board if they are indeed still available. Only a day or so away from my parts manual that should net a part number for you, if interested... You'd be surprised...the aftermarket needs to make money, even if it means buying GM parts at your cost, reboxing them and selling them for a profit. Or finding some dirt floor factory in china that will make knockoffs cheap enough to turn a profit. :)

I checked GM Parts Direct and they only had the 205 switch. The 208 seems to be a mystery.

That's incorrect:

GM PART # 14037986
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $17.32
OUR PRICE: $10.26

Part number was taken straight out of my GM '85-88 parts manual.

is that for the 208?

okay a few wires were crossed the blue/green one goes to tranny and the white/black goes to t-case. now the 4wd light comes on when i wiggle the 205 shifter so is the switch bad??where can i get one?? does anybody have pics???

Well I just picked up the new 208 switch today from my local GM stealership. I am a little pissed that it is the same goddamn switch as the reverse light switch in my SM465. :angry1:

So after $17.50 for a switch I could have got it way cheaper from LMC. Oh well, **** happens :surepal:

Well, it's good info anyways! I wondered if that later 465 switch was available. Sorry to hear you had to find out the expensive way.

How much did LMC want? I assume to your door it would have been slightly less from gmpartsdirect.com than the dealership, they always rape you. Almost double the list price I see. Typical.

well it would have been $10ish from GMPartsDirect but also I just realized that it would have been about $10 for the shipping, so its really 6 to 1 - half dozen to the other. :deal:
