I know it seems backwards but here is the deal. I would like to rebuild the trans in my 4WD burb to handle towing better (maybe even look for a 4L80 or NV4500) and regear the rear end to 3.73. But I don't have the option of a lot of down time. I am already planning on swapping the TBI engine from my 2WD burb into the 4WD and started thinking of just doing the entire drive train from the 2WD. I am thinking of doing the engine, trans, crossmember, drive shaft, and rear axle (3.73). The thinking is that I could still drive it with no problems while I upgrade the 4WD stuff and possibly start looking for some 3/4 ton axles plus I would get an idea if I like the 3.73 gears or not. The only thing I can think of is the pinion angle on the rear axle maybe being a bit off. And I would have to have my tires swapped to the 5 lug wheels. Anything else that might be a problem?

Should work just fine to get you around while you build the 4wd stuff, I say go for it. As long as your using all those components it should work other than the exhaust may be screwy for the crossmember. Even that shouldnt be in the way though.
