I am going crossover and hooking up the power steering hose, it doesn't fit. What's the deal here. Autozone only had one size, the one I have, not the one I need. Any ideas? I pulled the box at a pick n pull for $30.00. Mid 80s Chevy truck. The nut on the hose is way too deep. The fitting on the box is shallow.

that hose is a 80+ saginaw style hose.. with the o-ring...

pre 80 boxes use standard flare fittings... post 80 boxes use the saginaw...

Crap, thanks. I thought I got the box frrom a 80s truck. Will this box work if I get a hose for a 70s truck? Thanks bud!

you'll have to run a pre-80 pump with the flare fitting too...

I think the other end of the hose may then be the issue. You may need a custom hose made up with one end the flare or whatever its called and the other the "o" ring.

Fitting at the back of the pump itself can be swapped as well.

Well sheit. This sucks. The box is installed and ready to go. I am finishing grooving the last tire now, I still need to rebuild the front rt. hub and work out the bugs in the steering.

If I buy a new pump from a 70s truck, will it just bolt in and fit correctly with a 87 motor? I don't have time on my hands right now, if I could buy 2 hoses and a pump, that would be easier. Will that work? Thanks ya'll

You should be able to swap the pump no problems, that is to say, I'm not aware of any differnces beyond the hydro assist type pumps and the standard type with the res. right on the pump.

If you get a junkyard pump, I'd just swap the fitting. Junk yard pump might not be any good and if you know yours is....

Either of those options, you should be able to get lines for the earlier flare type and be set.

Thanks! I'm just going to back to the junk yard and do it all over again. Pull it, clean and paint it, install it. I will make sure to get the right one. I wish I would have known this in the begining. I thought just a 2x box is all I needed.

Everything else is done as far as the steering. Just get a new box.

Or you could use your old 4wd box and swap in the sector shaft from the 2wd box.
It's really easy.

Thanks. I will try to do that first. Is there a write up on this? Thanks. I will try to search for it.

I went to the pick and pull this morning. I got another box, the correct one. I have cleaned it and its awaiting paint. I am going to use the other 2x box as a spare sector shaft. I pulled the one on the burb and will be installing the correct box this afternoon.

You could also pull the flare seat out of the box and then it becomes an O-ring fitting box. I've never pulled the flare seat out of a box so I don't know how tight they fit but a square style EZ-out should do the trick.

i'll have to remember that.^^

coulda saved alot of trouble and just swapped the sector shafts.

i couldnt get my fittings to break free on my truck... 1978 on east coast salt roads and mucky mud.... so i just swapped the sector shafts...

also used a d60 front pinion nut as it is double the thickness so got double the threads on the shaft...

I went to pick and pull first thing this morning. Got the correct box, cleaned and painted and installed. Thanks guys!

Now I can apart the other sector shaft and carry it as a spare!
