Picked up a '90 K5 the other night and like an idiot didn't test the four wheel drive before I bought it. Anyway, took her out for a spin tonight and decided to test the 4x4. Put the truck in neutral shifted the floor shifter to 4hi, put it truck back in drive and the engine just reved. Obviously the 4x4 won't engage, just wondering how easy or difficult it will be to fix, or if I'll need a new TC all together.

Yep, it's there. And by the way the "Four Wheel Drive" indicator light comes on on the dash.

So in order for the auto hubs to lock the truck has to be moving, then engaging the 4x4??

no, not moving, though i think you can shift in and out while doing under 20mph, though i would just leave it in drive and shift it to 4 hi then try. make sure the hubs are locked, have a friend check to see if the shafts spin

also, since you have autohubs, after you disengage 4wd, you have to reverse a few feet to unlock them, at least on the older onces, not sure about the newer models

Just went outside and drove it around the block. Tried shifting into 4hi while going about 5mph and I couldn't get it to shift from 2hi to 4hi, wouldn't budge. Tried with foot on the brake as well.. I'm guessing the hubs aren't locking for some reason.

You are shifting into neutral. Your linkage may need some adjustment. Even if your hubs weren't engaged you would still move via the rear axle. What happens in 4lo?

when i shift the truck into neutral the floor shifter will go from 2hi to 4hi but the engine will just rev when i put it back in drive. when i tried shifting from 2hi to 4hi while truck was in drive i'm not able to move the floor shifter past 2hi, it doesn't want to go down to 4hi. (auto hubs by the way)

Yeah I got that. I don't think you are shifting it far enough and/or your linkage is out of whack. Have you tried 4lo?

You might also try shifting the floor shifter back just a bit further to try and engage the 4hi. Where are you at in Kansas?

Wichita...I will try I just don't want to break anything, just doesn't feel like it wants to go back any further.

Sounds like either the shifter is out of adjustment, or the pads on the shift fork are worn out (common problem for the 208/241 t-case).

my forks are worn and it still works, it just dosnt stay in 4hi when i hit bumps, though i guess mine arnt that bad haha. Yeah i 2nd the linkage as well. Try 4lo, then get under there with a friend and see that when he shifts it, the actual shifter level on the tcase moves into the proper positions

bb12, I live in Goddard, Ks. Send me a pm and we can get together and check it out. It may not be that big of a deal to fix (but who knows?). I've learned alot about my K5 from the knowledge available on this site.
Great people (some with attitude....:D) and Good times.
There is a lot of help here, and it's priceless. :wink1:
