I have a gen IV two bolt 454 that I would like to stroke to a 496. think it'll handle it? I'm not going to get too crazy with RPM but would like the torque. I have a set of 049 heads for it too. I just want to know if a two bolt is a good platform to even consider building or should I find a four bolt?

I'm sure he'll want more info on the motor (ie; cam / intended use / rpm range / etc).

Should be fine if you keep the pistons light and RPM low.

On both 454 BB and 400 SB the main caps should be the same width side to side regardless the number of bolts, that is what will spread the load and help prevent the cap from walking. In other words the surface clamping area is the same on both 2B and 4B versions. On the other size motors, the 2 bolt caps are only the width of the 2 bolts.

The installation of studs will increase the clamping force which will help.

Bottom line, the 454 is a great platform to start with regardless of number of bolts. You can also add Splayed Caps or caps from another motor and have it lined bored if you really believe you need a 4 bolt.

I previously worked in R&D for several manufacturers and in plenty of high end machine shops and caps/ bolts rarely fail when installed correctly. There is typically some other problem that causes a failure and the blame is placed on the bolts or caps. The same failure you see on a 190,000 psi stock bolt will occur on a 220,000 psi ARP Bolt/ stud.

Yes you can stroke a 454 to 496 (i built one for Greg72 recently). You really don't need a 4 bolt block (those are bragging rights for most people) unless you plan on a Turbo or Blower. Just use a good quality fastener like ARP and you'll be good. You could have a shop install splayed 4 bolt caps which will be stronger than a factory 4 bolt block but once again, bragging rights.

nope! I don't need bragging rights. You seem to be the MFIC here when it comes to this kind stuff. I figured it would be fine if I stud the bottom end but wanted your input. Thanks:D

Hmm, ok sounds good to me. :wink1:
How big did your head just get?? :haha:

But i have to agree. Any motor building problems i know who to turn to.

For the record i'm going to be getting 2 built soon so look for some questions :D Not building them myself. A friend of my dads
