Anyone see the 4x4 program on TLC(The learning Channel)today?There was a exert showing a specially built 4x4 to cross the Antarctic.What was REALLY cool was how they dealt with the tires popping a bead(the tires were aired down to 5 or 10 PSI due to the fluffy snow).They'd lay the tire on the ground and spray lighter fluid on the inside of the rim.Then create a stream of lighter fuid to the tire and set it alight!The following tiny flare-up of lighter fluid would instantley reinfllate the tire and"POP" the bead is reset.It was really cool to see!

i have seen that show before you can also use starter fluid to pop the bead back on but it is a dangeras trick but a good one when you have no other way to fix it and are out wheeling

cool to watch the tire blow up,but very dangerous!the local tire shop near me has pics of a guy doin it,then the tire exploding,and him flyin thru the air.OUCH!

I didn't see the program but i have heard of people doing it. Man it seems dangerous though!! But I bet it is loud!! :)

I've seen that show a couple of times. At the beginning they show some tricked out Jeeps doing some hard core rock crawling. It's part of TLC's "Extreme Machines" series. Cool stuff!

You really need to know what you're doing when playing with the explosive method of tire mounting. Too much of the explosive agent and KaBoom! Adios Amigo! A little bit goes a long way...

Hey all
As a mechanic in a log truck outfit, I have had to mount quite a few tires this way.
Sometimes when a tire has been in a stack for a long time and it's cold it won't seat useing an air cannon, no matter how many times you try.
A snort of starting fluid usualy does the trick.
Just don't use half a can or you'll be patching a hole in the ceiling. And if that's all that happens you're lucky.

That was a really good show, i also saw a show on tlc where they had little doon buggies with nitrous systems in it putting out over 800 horsepower trying to climb up these hills and once they started to get stuck just flipped the nitrous and flew up the hill. Most of the time they would roll over backwards. Does anyone know what im talking about?

Ya, I've had to do this a few times, when we run on to a piece of equipment that runs tubeless tires (most of the mil-spec stuff is tube or has a beadlock/runflat). Doesn't pop that bad unless you really over do it with ether. Lot's of times it not even enough pressure to hold the bead against the rim before you can put air pressure in. The best way is to use an "Air-Blaster" device that blows five gallons of 90psi air in between the rim & tire with a big valve and nozzle.

Hey crazylarry i know what ya mean . .. it's "icelandic" 4 wheeling. Those buggy things are AWESOME! I heard they can change in axle in 5 minutes

Those nitrous buggies were in the same program.As they got to the top and needed a little boost they'd tap a switch to infuse some nitrous into the eng.That was cool too!

I hadn't seen that show in quite a while and i just remembered certain parts but it was a really good show. Didn't they have a segment on monster trucks too featuring bigfoot?

hehehe been there done that didn't even bother to take the rim off the truck! Ripped a valve stem out at Dixie run last year and rolled the bead. Had a spare stem. Bud Ken on the same ride as me got a glint in his eye and said I got an idea! So I'm game cause I'm tired and really not wanting to drag this muddy tire around so I said "Sure let's light my truck on fire and see if we can do it on the truck. His wife watched the clock as we jacked it up put the stem in, hooked a air line to it, Ken sprayed the tire down and threw the match. KA BOOM! tire back on the rim I hit the air. He threw some dirt to put the tire out hehe. 7 minutes and we were rolling! Was pretty kewl but OHHH so dangerous!
DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME!
2 problems you need to be aware of.
1. Valve has to be out and you may still have problems. Once it pops the tire back on the bead the starting fluid is still burning inside the tire. It uses up all the air inside said tire and creates a vacume and it can and will suck the tire back off the bead even with the stem out. Big tire little hole. If you got air available and a lock on chuck you can pump some air in real quick to keep it from sucking off but it needs to be ready.
2. Your playing with fire and your making a bomb. Have an extinguisher ready. Also this is a little goes a long way deal. It doesn't take as much as you think. The more you use the more fuel that's available the more you will have a problem with #1 and the more dangerous it can be.
Serious, this is dangerous and if your stupid enough to do it at least try to make it as safe as you can. I sure wouldn't do this with anything flamable like leaves or pinestraw around. Dirt road trick for sure and have the kids standing behind the truck for safety. Only the person throwing the match in the area so only one person to get hurt, maimed or killed if something goes wrong.

mount tires like this all the time. After you do it a while you get a good feel for how much ether to use. Learned it from my friends dad (truck driver) he does this on his big truck a lot. We did this on my friends 38's, one of them i guess we used a bit too much ether, didnt blow nuthin up but the Ground Hawg jumped 4 foot in the air, no lie. Grim is right, the trick is to get the air on it right away.

That was a way cool show.. I've seen it a couple of times.. Love the Jeeps in the beginning.. and the bit on the Hummers..
Man I miss driving Hummers when I was in the military.....
