What would it take to install a 350 TBI w/700r4 from a 4x4 K5 to a 1972 C10 with a 350/350?

I'm asking because someone is interested in buying my set up to do this. I know the tail shaft on the 700r4 would need changed to the 2wd, but since there would be no transfer case will their drive shaft still work?

I believe the motor mounts should be the same, so how much of a pain is it to do the swap?

Change tail shaft and probably shorten the driveshaft.

You're going to need the tail shaft and 2wd tail shaft housing. Removing the tail shaft is a job that requires disassembly of the major components of the transmission. It's not a terribly difficult job if you're handy, but it is going to require some work. If you had plans for a rebuild or strengthening now would be the time.

TH350s with the 9 1/4 inch tail housing (long tail) are nearly the same length as a 700R4, so if that's the one you have the driveshaft will be the right length. If not, the 700 is longer and can't use the same driveshaft. The linkage (may need adjustment) and the trans mount should work. You will have to relocate the cross member a couple inches. The speedo should hook up (remember now you'll have to read off the transmission instead of the transfer case) but may need a new gears to read accurately. These assumptions are based on what I know of 73-87 vehicles, so if the 72 is substantially different in linkage/cross-member/trans mounting your mileage may vary.

As for the TBI, you'll just have to address the fueling and some electrical issues (HEI versus points, wiring for computer, brake switch for lockup), but nothing major.

It's not terribly difficult overall, but it's not simply a plug-and-play swap. I'm sure others will chime in with additional details.

I would call some transmission shops, they might be willing to swap your 4x4 transmission for a rebuilt 2wd one ready to bolt in,if its in good shape--if it is not they may sell you a 2wd rebuilt cheaper than full price --its harder to find the 4x4 ones,at least around here...seeing you'll need to either have the output shaft swapped or drive shafts mods,it might be cheaper and easier to just get a 2wd transmission..
