My shifter will not stay in place and about the only way I can get it to stay is to lower the ash tray down so the shifter will not move back to 2WD. What can be the problem here? Is it the transfer case or is it something simple? It is a stock setup if that matters. :o

You should have a 241 T-case. You might try adjusting the linkage from the shifter to the t-case underneath the truck. It might not be engaging all the way into 4HI, does it pop out of 4LO aslo?

When I lifted mine, it shifted the transfer case and the little track plate that the shifter slides in would hit the shifter before it would actually engage. I had to redrill the holes bigger that holds the plate on so that I could slide the plate down and now the shifter doesn't hit.

If you haven't lifted yours, your problem is most likely the linkage, as stated before.

Mine is still on the stock suspension, but I was told the linkage was fine. If this really is the case (that the linkage needs to be adjusted) how much do you think I'm looking at? Like 70 bucks or 700 bucks?

Like an hour's worth of labor, so probably near $70. Unless you can read the Hayne's manual and understand it enough to do it yourself.
