4x4 with good mpg and good performance?

Our XJ never managed better than 14.5 mpg...plus it was a beotch to work on, unless you have hands like a little girl and are double jointed.

Im having some MPG-success with my longmile 2.5L. A friend of me though, does very many MPGs (Dont feel like doing math, right now :p:) with his on, 31s, 3" and lockers. A perfect DD, IMO.

I have a 22r in my 87 toy truck. Great engines, last forever if you do standard maintenance and never run them out of oil. Have to watch changing oil in them, the oil filter gasket often gets stuck onto the block at removal and you can't see it. Anyway, those and the 22re will go hundreds of thousands of miles.

I had the same problem Gas was killing me for the burban. 2 weeks ago it was 140 to fill the tank. I burn that every 4 days. It was not pretty so I bought an O3 Ranger 4x4 . 3.0L V6 Nice LITTLE truck. Gets up and moves very nicely, smooth and comfortable at 80mph and gets 22highway and 18 city. With the 16 inch rims and 245 75 tires it's not bad off road. Its too new to try anything serious, but its been in mud, some small sand hills it does very well considering. With the exception of towing capacity , the minimal seating and cargo room (hey burban is big ranger is small) Its a decent little truck.

Chalk up another one for the toyota! As said before the 22re is a very reliable motor and has almost as much power as the 3.0v6, but if you are looking for a solid axle truck the 3.0 was never offered anyway. The one problem with the 22r or re is the plastic timing chain guides, they tend to wear out and allow coolant to get into the oil, you can get metal guides though for pretty cheap and they are ease to install. There is tons of aftermarket support for the 22r's and re's and they can make more than enough power to move a lightweight toyota. I have a '93 4runner with the 3.0 that I just bought about a month ago, im not sure on what kind of millage im getting yet since I have gone wheeling on every tank I have put in it so far :doah: , and as you all know 4low is hard on fuel mileage! Every time I have checked it I have been getting around 14(remember that is with wheeling miles on each tank!). I recently installed manual locking hubs and am expecting this to help millage some since i can unlock them for on road and I am expecting around 17mpg highway with it.

how about the turbocharged 22r (22ret, i think)? does it have a much shorter life, or did they set it up well enough? and how about drivetrain, especially auto tranny? strong enough for some decent wheelin, and maybe slightly larger tires? tire size shouldn't hurt mpg too bad, since the real mileage killer, here in dfw, is looooooong periods of idling on jammed highways. somebody always finds a reason to drive into something or someone. idiots.

an efficient little toyota isn't looking half bad, these days. it's ok, since i'll still have my c1500. i drove an 06 tocoma, at gm's "Autoshow in Motion," saturday. not half bad, now that they made it big enough to fit in. nice power, too. too much $$ right now, though. and, a little off topic, we tested the h3, and didn't hate it. under any name but hummer, it's offroad performance would probably look really good. but, the h1 sets the bar so high.
