I hate to admit being lazy and not talented enough to find it somewhere on the 'net by myself, but I am trying to find some info on 5.3 LS engines. My Dad bought a 2010 5.3 with only 28K on it with the idea of putting it in his '02 Sliverado. I was of the understanding that the long block is interchangable, but I want to be positive before we pull his truck apart. Can anyone offer some direction please?
So far I have found that all are the interchangable '99-'07, but that is not solid info either. I know there are differences outside of the long block, but not sure on this.
Thanks in advance!

Why's he swapping? My 02 I had ran better and felt stronger with over 200k miles than my 07 does at less than 100k.

I have not been able to convince him that he does not need to worry about the piston slap on cold start-up. It started to do that about 5k miles ago. He pulls a camp trailer with it some and wants the piece of mind.

I thought I found that the Displacement-on-Demand was in the intake, but not sure. I have looked some on LS1tech, but was not finding a conclusion. I also found performancetrucks.com but I guess I find it hard to go elsewhere besides CK5. I guess I am just suspicious about finding trustworthy info other places.

Could you guys give any insight on if he needs to worry about his current engine? He has 107K on it.

pull up ALL the threads on cold start pistion slap on ls1 and show him its o.k. basicly huge notorius problem with them .

should have heard my boss's 6.2 in his truck after sitting for 3 weeks no start . :eek1: got quiet in 2-3 min and still just fine.

or swap it for him or steel his newer motor and swap it in your truck for more vroom vroom .

I was already thinking on his 'old' engine as this 2010 came complete along with a 2wd 6L80E and I found Mast motorsports has a retro-fit harness to run it all! Plus my neighbor keeps telling me I need to come get a '76 2wd blazer he has..... Like I need more projects! But man, when the parts are so close!!

I would not worry about his current engine at all, we have 2 2500hd's, granted they are 6.0 trucks, but the 03 has 385k on it and the 02 has 325k on it. Neither engine has ever been apart, both have been maintained similarly (the higher mile 03 has always used regular oil even) and both have had piston slap when cold for the last 250k :haha: . The 03 is going to be donating it's 6.0 shortly for my brothers Wagoneer build, we plan to pull the heads and pan to do some checking to see if it will even get rebuilt or just re sealed.

The '10 engine is not directly compatible with the '02 pickup. Crank reluctor wheel is different, cam and knock sensor mounting are different. Not to mention AFM with its different cam, lifters and solenoids in the valley. You could convert it but it would be cheaper and way easier just to get the correct engine.

A Big Thanks

Thanks a ton for the info and replies!!!!:D:D:bow:

I plan to get my Dad to check all this out so he can feel more confident in his truck.
Now I have to figure out if I have the time to take on another project that could use this engine/trans combo!:doah:

I agree. The 2002 engine and computer uses a 24x crank sensor, and your 2010 will have a 58x in it. They are not interchangeable without pulling the crank out and changing the reluctor wheel (not easy or cheap). You'd be better off selling your 2010 engine and using that money to have your 2002 engine rebuilt professionally. Here's a quick read on the topic...

Thank you!! I couldn't come up with where I had read SOME things of that sort.
