5.3 mpg, gotta fix that...

this is why i stood away from bb's.. i had one in my hands.. tbi 454 with everything to run.... $300.. but i turned it down and bought vortec heads, cam, intake for my sb350....

without OD... 4.56's and hawgs (38.8 true) not towing i can get 12mpg.... up highway and i only go fast enough to get to 2500rpms.... however she has driven at 0rpm for 2.5 years..

personally are you going to tow with it often? if so then id say gears, OD trans..... or smaller tires when towing...

or get a second vehicle for towing....(got me a 08 silverado... only 1500 though... but will tow...)...:woot:

ill tow my blazer maybe three times a year. other than that, a load of tires here and there. once a week 35 miles maybe. i drive slow anyways, i cant imagine how slow im gonna go on 4.56! lol i will soon be switching to the 37 radial goodyear MT/R hummer tires. it would be nice to have round tires lol

im definately gonna be looking into tbi and OD if it will DOUBLE my fuel efficiency!
i appreciate the real world insight, but i am kinda bummed to do another trans swap.
ive got 5k miles on this th400, just installed in december. i dont see it going out soon.

hmmm my truck came stock with 4.56's and i had 33's... with smc465 i could still hit 100mph.. so yeah ya still can get her up and running

I think 4.56's and 37 will be a nice fit....

and about the new trans...
trust me... you can do something about that... IT CAN BE FIXED TO BE REPLACED!!!!!!!!!! :sign29:

cough*CUMMINS 6BT*cough :pimp:
If I hit the lotto, Ill swap one in for my 6.2, and DONT be HATIN on my six two! HA HA!

not hating.. id love to have a diesel.... but if i had a 6.2 id have to put it in the bed for weight in the winter :haha:

only messin with ya man.. but yeah.. diesel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! id love one..

It looks like you could improve your mileage by driving a motorhome around. :D

Yeah it's a pig - yeah it's got a BBC, but if it's only getting 5.3 something is wrong. Sure a fuel injection conversion will probably fix it, but you might be able to get 80% of those gains just by fixing whatever is wrong with the current setup. Personally I would find a TBI setup and swap it on. But if you hate computers it might be time to go through the distributor and carb, check the cat and EGR, etc.

do you have any pics of said dually we could look at?

i'd leave the th400 if you just rebuilt it.

tune up the 454, put in good plugs, check your thermostat, make sure your engine is running in the temp range it is supposed to. have your quadrajet rebuilt if it is in the 750 cfm range, and tuned.

switch to a lighter synthetic oil, castrol makes a 0-30w, that has given me good results, and use a 10000mile filter.

adjust your timing to just before it starts to pop. run 91 octane.

inflate tires to max psi. use all terrain tires.

keep it light. if you aren't using it keep it out of the truck.

rubber airdam under front bumper.

your gears should be fine ffor a 454. it sounds like you are lacking in power and in need of a tune up. i would change cam and carb before i did anything with the transmission or gears if i was in your shoes. my 366td did fine with 3.73 36" sx swampers and a 750 edelbrock.
