I am going to look at a 5.3 later this week and need some info so I know what to look for. The motor is supposed to have high mileage (waiting on response to find out how high), and has been dissasembled down to a stripped block. Supposed to be complete minus the TTY bolts, lifter cups, coils, and bearings. Oil pan to intake with TB and injector/rails. No wiring harness, no accessories or brackets. Guy says his truck had high mileage, so he bought a replacement engine to install, so he kept a lot of the external stuff to put on the replacement. Afterwards he torn down the engine just to see what type of wear it had. Planned to rebuild it for a project and never did.

1. Since it is torn down I plan to inspect all the parts before making any sort of deal. Is there anything specific to inspect on these engines that is not common on all engines? This is my first foray into the LS engines as you can probably tell. Where can I find casting numbers for the block, crank, intake, TB etc. I want to be able to make sure that I am actually getting all 5.3 parts and not some mix of other engine sizes. This is a iron block with alluminum heads.

2. What is a fair price. Hes is asking $500 which seems kinda high compared to what I read other guys here getting running engines/harness/computer for. But I also realize that pricing in my area is usually higher due to supply and demand. Only 2 decent salvage yards intown, others are 2-3 hrs away. Yard prices for a runner run $1-2 K. So does the price seem fair? I will of course try to talk him down some.

I don't need a runner right now. I am just trying to find a 5.3 to put in my 71 Camaro RS that I am working on. Right now I just need a mockup block more than anything. I don't even mind rebuilding it down the line, thats not a problem. I just don't want to get suckered on paying too much for what it is, an engine in a box. "Some assembly required!"

Sounds a bit pricey for an engine in a box with no accessories. I almost think I would rather go to a wrecker to see what I could find. They usually come complete with all accessories from intake to oil pan.

car-parts.com yields this for a 2 min search. I would be willing to bet you could find one even cheaper. 74,000 on this one for just a bit more and no hunting down parts the other guy removed.

There is a guy on pirate4x4 that is selling them for around $600 with all everything on the motors, some of the motors have around 150k on them.

Finally heard back from the guy today. It had over 200K when he pulled it. When pricing just what it would take to reassemble it the total came to close to $1K just for gaskets, head bolts, and bearings, and those are just the things I know need to be replaced. Decided that if I was going to a 5.3 it would be worth driving to the Dallas area to get a better deal. I told the guy the most I could offer was $200 and he passed. Oh well I am not in a real hurry on it. Thought if nothing else I might could get a cheap mockup block to use but no go.

Ya that guy wants too much for what he's got.
I paid $1200 for a running complete 5.3 with harness and 4l60e with 74000 miles.
