So does this mean a detroit with 4.56's on it wont accept 5.38's?

It depends if the 4.56s are thick or not. If it is a 4.56 carrier then no 5.38s will not work. You need the 4.10 and down case but the detroit will swap between the two.

Your 4.56 carrier requires "thin" gears which are hardly made and are big $$. SO if you are looking to do a gear swap just find some stock 4.10 carriers.
