5.7 diesel correct?

He's on crack for that price. Especially with the picture of it sitting there covered in salt.

My ex-FIL loved those engines. He'd pick up cars with them cheap, detune them, add something...think it was a water seperator?...then drive the wheels off of them for a few years. Said he was getting 30+ mpg in a fullsize car. My ex-MIL could drive down to Nashville, TN from mid Michigan and then get halfway back home on a tank of gas. Said they were SLLOOOOOWWWWWW but great after he got them "right".

One of my old bosses had a 1978 Caddy Seville (the one with the back end chopped off at a slant!)-that had a 5.7 Olds diesel and a TH200 tranny!..what a "pile" that thing was!..but he loved it,he got it from a local Chevy dealer that owed him quite a bit for parts they bought one year and he decided to accept the car as payment,it was a trade in,only 5 years old with about 42K on it...

He knew the diesels were considerd "junk" shortly after they were introduced, but figured it would last long enough to be worth taking, and he could always put a 350 gas olds motor right in if the diesel blew---he gave it to his wife ,but he ended up using more than her--he said he'd get 25 mpg on trips and liked the fact diesel fuel cost less than gas back then...the TH200 croaked 3 times in 20K miles, but the motor hung tough and never gave trouble, but he was anal about keeping the filters and oil changed often,he put a Raycor fuel filter on it...only "trouble" he had with it really was getting it started in frigid cold weather, the glow plugs were always failing or wouldn't energize half the time...

Ya theres a lates 70s gold colored Caddy running around my old neighbourhood. with the 5.7 olds diesel. its badges as such, and it apprears to run great. and by the sound of it it is obviously the diesel in it still.

They also came with a 4.3 litre diesel that was much better, it did also get much better mileage, at 35-40mpg.
There are still a few old and caddys running around here with those 4.3

We sold a 4.3 diesel in an '83 Malibu that we had at the junkyard ,someone paid 500 bucks for it,sight unseen!..

I nearly got a GMC Cabbalaro (El-Camino clone) with one back in the late 90's--I had bought an '82 identical to it that had the eggbeater 229 V6,and I was thinking of swapping in the diesel, but I ended up just putting a timing chain in the 229 and it ran halfway decent,so I passed on the diesel donor,it was a rotbox and only good for parts, and had 150K on it,guy wanted 700 bucks firm for it...not worth it to me!..but those were the only 2 I ever saw ,they were pretty rare I guess...

Recently I saw an ad on the Boston CL,someone selling a few old GM cars with 5.7 diesels for 500 bucks, and he had a brand new "crate" 5.7 he was asking 3500 bucks for--I wish him LOTS of luck getting that much for one of those turds, even brand new they were worth their weight in scrap iron!...

the 5.7L diesel blocks are or at least were valuable to some racers. converting it to gas, the block structure and walls were very thick apparently. could be bored out .125" or more. but with the advent of all the aftermarket blocks availiable nowdays. maybe only valuable to retro racers.
