trying to finalize my spring order from alcan. what says it im not too keen on the idea of torching yet another hole in the frame of my 78. i have the b52 brackets and just want to see if anyone has used the 56" springs on the front or am I stupid for thinking it?

yeah, if I were getting alcan springs I would go with a shorter length spring like 50" or even the stock 47" springs. The purpose of the longer front springs is cheap flex, with custom springs you can get the flex and smooth ride out of a shorter spring so you dont have the crappy approach angle of 52s or 56s.

nah decided to keep it, i got some more cash by doing side work during the holidays for people.

A great many have done 56's up front. If you're buying custom springs, then you might as well go with something shorter. 52/56's advantage comes from the wallet department. If you already have them or can get them from a pick-n-pull for cheap then by all means, use them.
