The way I see it,
Downside is it's like a fork sticking out up front. It will hook on things if you don't watch where you point it and maybe even when your careful.
Upside is they will make your springs last longer for sure. If you over stuff a rear spring they will crack. Another point that leads to spring failure is the fact that the next leaf up is kinda long. To really do it right they should be taken to a spring shop and a couple small/short leaves be made to step down the stresses properly.
I left mine on and know some that have taken theirs off.
