Is it even remotely possibly to have a 5th gear in a 700R4? Have a guy on another site claiming so and that with his 5th gear his 2500 Sug is getting 27-30mpg with a 6.2. I'm a Mod there and **** is hitting the fan. He's a known idiot but I need some facts.

Thanks guys :D.

Well, the 6 speed allison in the newer HDs was basically the 5 speed with a change to the valve body. :dunno:

There is a 6 spd 4l80e out there, but to the best of my knowledge nobody is messing too much with the 700r4 as far as additional gears. Maybe he is talking about an overdrive unit like the gear vendors company offers???

He claimed it to be aftermarket but I called BS and so did others. He makes outlandish claims all the time so I just wanted to find a good reason to show him "the facts" for a change:haha:. Maybe he has a add on deal like that Bowler unit .

or is he enough of an idiot to think he's got a 5th gear when his converter locks in???

I've built a few 700R4's. there is no ****ing way of adding anther gear of any kind in there, there physically is not room. Don't believe me? pull one apart your self. it aint happening.

I did a search, GM had a 5 speed transmission....

2000– 5L40-E/5L50 — 5-speed medium-duty (used in Cadillac's Sigma vehicles)

maybe he's got one of those??? probably not though, the load rating is even below the 700R4 (4L60E)

Imma have to jump on the lockup converter 5th gear bandwagon. :thumb:

Now he's claiming it's a Overdrive unit, once he got called out :haha:.

well then tell him he's not using it right. a properly utilized overdrive unit should effectively be a gear splitter, meaning his 700R4 should become an 8 speed transmission, and not just a 5 speed.
