I've been casually looking at 6.0 engines for awhile for a swap into my '72 and I've got a line on one I'm going to be looking at tomorrow. I've always heard that I should be looking at a 2003-2007. The one I'm supposed to look at tomorrow is a 2002 with only 80k on it. Is there some reason a 2002 is not a good option for a swap?

2002 should be a good year. Dbc, and have the red/ blue connector ECM. I am no expert though, and just started gatherings research myself

As long as you dont buy an iron head motor you should be fine. Im no expert but Ive never heard of anything being revised or fixed that would make certain years "stay away from" material.

ok cool, thanks guys. probably just some misunderstood info I picked up some time ago or something. Hopefully it turns out to be a good engine. I'll know tomorrow.

There was a issue with the early 6.0 loosing the roller bearings out of the rocker arms and causing all kinds of issues. But if it's got 80K I'd say it's not gonna happen. I think it was a issue within the first 10-20k miles of the motor.

That's the only 6.0 issues I've heard of

Piston slap? I had an '01 1500HD w/6.0 LQ4, piston slap was a problem. It was later resolved but not sure what year. If there's certain years that make better donors for some reason then disregard my comment.

Even then its an annoyance. Lots of our old work trucks rattle when cold started and are no worse for wear.

Not with mine. It was worse when cold, but almost always evident at idle. went away as soon as you touched the gas pedal and never hurt performance, but i hated that 'tick'. There was just no way to get rid of it.

I had a 09 L76 6.0 with around 12k and it started to piston slap, was noticeable at idle when fully warm. Ran like a raped ape until I got rid of it at 30k
