6.0l tow rig?

also what cam and heads work well on this engine? I heard from a guy at work that you could swap in heads off of a 5.3l? whats the details on that?

My DD Is a 2001 2500HD with a 6.0 and I have researched putting the 5.3 heads on it. Basically all you are gaining which is some by doing this is raising the compression on the motor at the cost of less efficient heads. You can port and put bigger valves in the 4.8/5.3 heads to flow the same as the 6.0 heads but unless you can do it yourself you are better off going with a set of aftermarket or "LS7" heads. Raising the compression will give a good increase in power but your tuning ie. spark advance will have to be adjusted to reduce pinging. The only difference in the LQ4 and LQ9 is compression ratio which in the LQ9 was accomplished with flat top pistons to the LQ4's dish pistons. The Early LQ4's had smaller connecting rods however most 2003+ had the same beefy LQ9 connecting rods. Cams you have a whole other set of parameters to deal with. Being you have a Manual transmission you dont have to worry about a Stall converter but there isnt many off the shelf "RV grind Cams" built for low end power for any of these motors. They are out there and you can get custom grinds but the aftermarket support is mainly for the quarter mile trucks not tow rigs. Performancetrucks.net is a good resource if you are looking for more power. Lots of knowledgeable people over there on these motors

The lq9's had beefier pushrods also.

As far as cheap head swaps go people have been getting 420 hp (on the lq9's) with the l92 heads (new 6.2 heads). They can be had for 600 on ebay.... You can find them on

They aren't the best torque heads but are an improvement over the stockers on the lq4. Great for building hp though.

I still say afr's are the way to go.

bah i say supercharge it. Why rip your engine apart ans spend a bunch of time labor to gain the same power that can be had by forced induction.
A buddy of mine has a SC 6.0 dually. It is one bad ass tow rig.
Took 1 day to install the sc.

The difference is about 2500 dollars.:deal::waytogo: + longer lifespan.

I have to go with the hypertech. I have had mine for 7 years now sent it in once for updates and it been great. It is a plug in and you set everything, no on the fly changes.
My exhaust up grade was just the muffler. system is dual up to the muffler with 3inch pipe. I just swapped a free flow midas muffler and it works great with out the heavy drone inside the cab and it was like 35 bucks.
K&N intake
The biggest thing is 4.10's my buddy has an 04 with 3.73's and it just not the same truck.
