I know they are prone to cracking but how many people here have actually found theirs cracked in the outer main cap bolts?

I have seen several cracked blocks, one let go on me driving 65 mph on the freeway with a tractor in the bed of the truck.

my old block had 3 cracks when i pull it, and was running fine. replace with a newer 599 block which had 1 small crack 4 years ago it runs fine so far . installed a banks turbo kit ,girdel ,and timing gears at same time. was wanting more power too haul a travel trailer.

I wonder about this too.
I have 2 660 blocks and have no idea if they are cracked.

The machine shop I go to said they are okay as long as you keep an eye on the ballencer.

Heard good things about the 599 and optimizer 6500.
Heard the 509 and 660 blocks are a crap shoot. Also heard the 1982 red blocks are pretty good.

That is all correct. The 6500 optimizer blocks are the best but I had a 1982 red block and it never gave me trouble, as with many others on the DieselPage website. I believe the red blocks have a higher amount of nickel, but cant remember 100% if that was the only difference.
