Ive found a 82 GMC 6.2 diesel pickup with about 80K on the clock and been maintained pretty well. I realize these are what they are, slow etc, but is 80K on one of these a lot and typically when is one seen better days?

That's nothing.

Although I'd wonder if it's 180k and it rolled over.

Even 180k is nothing to sneeze at. Well maintained they're like any other engine. They're supposedly a "250k" light duty diesel but plenty of folks have driven them a lot longer than that.

My very poorly maintained (self proclaimed by the previous owner) 84 6.2 K5 had over 300k. He said he changed the oil whenever he thought about it and not very often.

My best advice is to put 3.73 gears in it and a standard transmission if it doesnt already.

On second though you didnt say if it is 4x4 or 2wd. Im no expert but MOST 2wd I have seen had 3.08 gears and MOST 4x4s had 3.40 gears.

My 84 ended up with 3/4t axles with 4.11 gears and 33 tires and did really good. It got out of the hole decent, and still ran 65mph.

My '83 pick-up came with 3.42's and the 235-75 tires. It moves along just fine. 4.11's would be better, but at the expense of highway mpg's.

They're a decent engine if maintained well, and not used to try to tow a bazillion lb trailer around all the time (or ever...lol)
