Hey guys, was just curious how often you were supposed to replace the fuel filter on the 6.2. Mine is relocated on the firewall, so no big deal to get to, was just wondering. Thanks

Is this the 82-83 dual filter setup or the 84+ single filter setup (or something else entirely)?

In that case, replace it as soon as it starts leaking. :P

My owner's manual says to change the filter every 60,000 miles. I have replaced 2 6.2L filters on my trucks. The first one was getting plugged enough to restrict power output. The second one I changed after flushing out a batch of pretty nasty (unburnable) fuel. They so rarely cause problems that I think most folks forget about them. :dunno:

My '82 still has the Wix filter (spin on firewall type) that was on it when I bought it in '03......but I've only driven it about 8000 miles since then, and it looked new then...its getting kinda rusty on the outside of it now...

I've drained it every so often, and never got any water or crud out of it,and it has never starved for fuel..
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to change it...far as I can tell someone "deleted" the secondary filter,it appears there is only 1/4" fuel hose going to the injector pump from the firewall filter..most other diesels only use a 10 micron filter ,so I dont see a need for a 6 micron secondary one really..

Everyone says to change fuel filters often on a diesel--I probably should have ,but I never had any troubles with my VW Jetta diesel, which only had one fuel filter replaced in the 30K miles I owned it..

The filter on that was almost as big as my trucks, and the truck one holds a quart at least..it should take a long time to plug one up,unless you fill up with bad fuel or water gets in the tank..
I know injectors can get dirty or plugged up easy,I have been lucky in that respect no doubt..I may go up to the larger sized spin on filter the "big rig" detroits use, they do not cost much more, fit the original base OK,and there is plenty of room for a larger can..
