what kinda mpg did these rigs get in stock form, and would they make a good daily driver??

My M1009 - 6.2 (non turbo)/TH400/NP208/3.08 gears/33in goodyear MTR tires

got 20-23mpg crusing the highway at 55-60mph.

I loved it as a daily driver, and did so for several years, but did enough driving that it justified getting a TDI jetta. No tune ups, no cap and rotor issues, no burned plug wires, no fouled spark plugs, no faulty ignition system, etc. etc. the thing was, and is one of the most reliable engines Ive ever worked with. Even know, wrecked, rusted, and with a failed gas tank, and having sat for 2 years. I can put diesel in a jug, run the line to the filter, and crank that engine and it will fire right up.

The main drawback IMHO is the th400. I hate the shift points for that engine, and lack of overdrive. From what I understand, If you're keeping it relatively stock (nothing more than a 4in lift and 35's), an NV-3500 or NV-3550 is a fantastic upgrade for a physical clutch and an overdrive, with better gear spacing. all three will increase fuel economy over my base 20-23mpg. If a slushbox is your thing, a 700R4 was fairly common behind the 6.2's as well, however I cannot comment on their fuel economy.

The added bonus is that they are also great offroad. unless you're doing dunes and mud bogs where alot of hp is important. I used my truck for camping, and trail rides in GWNF, and never had it get stuck. I just got stopped by some rocks I simply didnt have the gearing to get over (3.08's are great for highway, not so great offroad).

My dually with 4.10s and a 4 speed will easily get 18+ mpg if you keep the rpms down. If you run 65-70 with the deep gears it doesn't like it. With a higher gear or OD it would do better. So far other than lack of power I really like it. Mine will get a turbo soon.

i have zero experiance with diesels, was thinking about trying to find one of these for a efficiant driver, was even thinking a 2wd 3/4 ton pick up

got 17.2 mpg on my return trip from Va beach about 5 weeks ago.

filled it up when I got home, still have 3/4 tank left. Haven't bothered with around town mileage, it's only 7 miles daily commute plus the occasional "trips to town" (Morehead City & New Bern)...:waytogo:

1990 'burb 2wd, 6.2, th400, 3.73 gears...I'm digging it. it's big, loud, and people get out of it's way. :thumb:

Mine ( not stock) returns me about 17 average. I have seen as high as 20 on the highway but that is at 55-60 I usually cruise around 70-75.

But mine has 35s and a 6" lift. So I would expect it to do around 18-19 if it was stock

My C1500 GMC pick-up (2WD duh...) gets 16-18 in town, and has seen ~25 on the highway cruising at 65-70 mph. It has 235-75's, 3.42's and a 700R-4 so cruise rpm at 65 is a perfect 1850 rpm. It was my daily driver for the last 5 years or so.

Hell, I got 16 mpg towing a 4000 lb 17' camper trailer from BC to Alberta through the mountains.

I have a '90 K5 that i bought in '94 with 49k on the clock. Drove it relatively stock for many years and got 18+ mpg with mostly city driving and always full throttle....it's not fast but was always reliable and I'm sure would get in the 20+ mpg on the freeway. It's since been highly modified for off-road use but would love to have another stockish one to daily drive.

6.2, 700r4, 3.73 gears and I thought it had adequate power. Ironically just this year I started a new job and met the previous owner of the K5 (I had bought it off a dealership). It was his wife's daily driver and he only got rid of it because they had a baby.

My 82 K2500 gets decent mileage, maybe 20 mpg tops --but I am not a big fan of the sluggish acceleration and noise the 6.2 has,I feel like I'm driving a backhoe around instead of a pickup much of the time!...I'd be just as happy with a 292 straight six, though one of those will only get maybe 12 mpg..I do not drive far or use the truck that often so the difference in MPG isn't a big deal to me,and gas is still cheaper than diesel by at least 25 cents here--so in reality its not that much more "economiccal"...I do like how the truck plows with the 6.2 though.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Things to consider when thinking of going with a diesel are ,one,it wont be easy to start in extreme cold, you'll need all the glow plugs working and a place to plug in a block heater if it gets below 20 degrees--(glow plugs are almost 100 bucks now for a set of 8)--and though a diesel has no carb, spark plugs or distributor to "tune up",when something does go wrong with it ,like an injector pump ,the cost to fix that will far exceed any savings you gained on fuel useage..even "simple" jobs on a gas V8 like doing valve cover gaskets is a rather involved process on a 6.2,you must remove all the fuel injector lines, intake manifold, etc, and that can be costly if one of the lines break....parts are harder to find than ones for small blocks and cost more, and not many mechanics will work on a diesel ,ones that will always charge a premium price....not trying to talk you out of buying a diesel, just pointing out the fact they aren't for everyone....

6.2 Injector lines

I have an 87 V20 , gets 22 on the hihway. Just noticed a crack in my number 6 cyclinder steel injector lines. Anyone know where to get them? Tried everywhere including steel soldiers and ebay!:dunno:

My now junked M1009 gave me 22mpg consistently on the highway with Bio fuel. I am currently rebuilding one but with a 91' high output J motor and a 700r built trans. I used to have a kid that worked for our family business that had a C10 w/6.2/700r long bed and he got 25-27. Of course that was years ago when diesel had sulfur in it. More sulfur means more btu's because of more heat. More Btu's means more power, better mileage. The new diesel fuel sucks! Do a simple test with HHO and pump diesel. Run 10 gallons of each and try and drive the same for each tank. You will see more than a 3mpg difference as I did.

mine ,88 6.2 ,banks turbo , nv4500, 410 gears and 33 "tires , 18-20 and 10 -13 pulling this load around 70,
like others have said 60-65 you can get some good mileage , the faster you go the worse it gets, it seems to drop really quickly. they are good motors and should last a long time for a daily driver
