I have been bitten by the diesel bug and I want to get another diesel truck sometime soon. But I want to do something a little different... I want to take a 6.2 and build it for some serious power. Not just slapping in a banks turbo kit, I'm talkin block up build. I have never even seen a 6.2 so I have no clue where to start, what the weak points are, and where and what parts to get.

Obviously I know I need to drop the compression... what else?

First thing, the 6.2/6.5L diesels did have a few issues with the lower ends. I think it had something to do with vibrations and the crank.

I also know some of the 6.2/6.5L castings were better than others.

So get a good block casting to start with.

Look up MaxPF's build on here. About the beefiest you can make a 6.2L.

Off the shelf there's the new 6500 engine that fixes about every flaw with the GM 6.2/6.5 engines and makes a boatload more power.

If you do decide to do this, let me know, I have the right block for you a 599 block that has been checked already.
I also have the crank with it.
It's from a Hummer and it's the last year of the 6.2, the second year they punched those blocks out to 6.5
These blocks are the thickest 6.2 blocks.
I will make you a good deal on it with anythig else I have for it, like some rods, covers, I even have some 88' heads but you might want to get some rebuilt heads.

Here's my thought on a built up 6.5TD, buy the AMG p400 engine. Trust me when I tell you that you WILL spend more money building one from scratch besides the time to find a good block, heads, crank and rods to use. Plus the AMG engine takes care of just about every flaw the 6.2/6.5 were plagued with and you'll have a warranty.

I spent over $8000 on my 6.5td only to find out that the way it was setup sucked ass for anything but running wide open throttle. Sure it was fast as hell but not good when you want to dd the truck. The cause of those issues was the aftermarket camshaft, so I swapped it out for a stock one. That cost me about a grand when all said and done, but the truck is much more enjoyable to drive. It is a little slower though, worth while trade off I think. Course I built that engine before the P400 was even available to buy. Now that it is though, that would be my choice.

Interesting to see you say that...but not unexpected. I remember when it came out and folks were talking about it and the thing sure seemed to fix all of our problems. Considering what a reman or new crate engine goes for they seem like a viable candidate for sure.

Anyone put them in a '73-91 truck yet? I saw a guy put one in a IFS truck.

Knowing what I know now, I should of ran a basic 6.2 in the truck until I had a better idea of how I wanted to use the truck. But hindsight is always 20/20, live and learn you know.

Unless you have a stock pile of parts or are just doing a basic rebuild on an engine you have, the P400 is the best choice. The cos of building it right yet not knowing it WILL last is to high to not consider it. If the the block ever cracks on my current motor I wouldn't even hesitate to buy one. I know of a few guys running them over on thedieselpage, but its some 90s truck and a motorhome or two. So far everything I've heard about them has been good.

Would be a sweet engine in your k5 AJM

That's the eventual plan. Too poor right now to do anything other than attempt to keep my junk running. The BIG upgrades will have to wait.

Hell, I'd probably leave it NA. I'm betting even then it'd seem like I'd strapped a rocket to the truck compared to now.
