I've got an '87 6.2 2wd Suburban with a 700r4 and 3.07 gears. I want to be able to tow about 5000 lbs. with it. What gear ratio could I swap to and still not go beyond the best 60 mph rpm.? It's got the stock 235/75/15's on it (28.9" tall).

Sounds exactly like my '83 C1500...except my pick-up runs 3.42's. With 3.42's it runs the ideal of 1850 rpm at 65 mph. It tows my boat just fine, and on the trailer that's about 3200 lbs.
You could drop to 3.73's without hurting fuel economy hardly at all...and it'll have a lot more snap around town and be OK for towing. Just make sure you tow in drive, or you'll kill that 700R-4.
