I hav been wanting toget a CUCV for a while now. I hav a friend that was in the Army as a mechanic and is a Gubment contractor now. I respect his opinion very much cuz he knows his stuff! He keeps telling me not to buy a CUCV cuz the 6.2 is JUNK!!!! Please tell me good things about it

He says they hav no purpose, besides necessaty. No balls, can't tow and r only diesel, not multiple fuel like other vehicles.

The 6.2 just like the cummins and the powerstroke or even the japanese diesels or the volkswagens, all are diesel only and will not like anything else. The only multifuel engines are the military deuce and a half and 5 ton rigs.
The 6.2 gets better mileage than the others but because of it doen't have the power to compete with them either, it does however have the power to tow and to cruise, speed is where they lack the power for when towing.
The cummins, powerstroke and duramax have enough power to tow with speed.
The 6.2 wasn't built to compete with HD motors, it was replacement for the 350 gas engine.
Want to hear good things about them?
Here goes:
everybody thinks they are junk so you can have them cheap.
There was enough of them produced that you can find used ones all the time.
There are so many that didn't even get the chance to go bad because the owners thought they were too slow so they replaced them with Gas engines.
They get you about twice the mileage of a 350 with similar power

What he said.

I'd like a bit more power and mpg out of mine but hey, I can't complain. I wouldn't put a Cummins, even a 4BT in either of mine for anything. Too much trouble and work.

With a hair drier installed, they'll go neck to neck with a mid 90s TBI 350, and have a lot more down low grunt to boot

First tank on the M1009.... 20.4mpg. I am pretty happy with that.

Replaced a very dirty air filter... very dirty... for the second tank. I wouldnt be surprised if I got another 1 or 2 on this next tank.

They are far from junk, they are actually a great engine. The problem comes with people expecting too much from them. These engines were designed with the idea of having an option to the 350s of the 80s with much better mileage. In that role they do a great job and have much better longevity to boot. I have had 3 that have topped 300,000 miles and kept on going with no problems, just good routine/preventative maint. When people start trying to tow heavy loads or running constantly at high revs is usually when things start to break. Not to mention that the majority of people that have owned these vehicles over the years don't do the maint. required which leads to failure.

Your Friend is wrong 6.2's are great engines when treated right
