i recently purchased an 82 suburban diesel. It has a lot of miles and a blown head gasket. Rather than fix it I would rather replace the engine. Where is the best most cost effective place to look?

Are you interested in running a turbocharger? If I was looking for a long block, I'd be buying a 6.5TD. If not, I'd still get the 6.5 but without running the turbine. It's the same basic engine but has a number of factory upgrades from the original '82 6.2 engine.

Looking for new or rebuilt or are you looking for a used engine

Looking for a quality rebuilt or new and will probably run a turbo at a later date. From what I’ve read the 82 block is the one to have, but the 6.5 heads are superior and either way head studs.

Well none of that here.
I do however have a nice 599 6.2 block if someone wanted to build a strong 6.2 turbo, or make a fresh 6.5 to build.

The 599 block is generally speaking considered the best block. Unless you can swing a P400 or optimizer.

I know.
I was keeping it to build a nice engine but I don't see it happening.
It was magnafluxed, and checked.
Align honed

Yeah...I'm currently adding a turbocharger to a block that is known to be cracked and known to have suffered from overheating in the past.

The drooling is involuntary.

Is there a particular year that 599 block came in or how do I determine which block I have?
The issue I am running in to is there are no engine builders in my neck of the woods willing to do a rebuild. Everyone around here does race engines or used engines and the one race engine shop said $7500, to which I replied they're not that much new.

I think the 599 block started when they started transitioning to a 6.5
The block would be bored out to 6.5 or keep it 6.2, so my guess is around 93, 94

And yes 6.2 rebuilds are expensive but not that much.
I think it's in the $3-4k range
