I am looking at a 82 K30 with a 6.2. The truck has 92k miles on it and is in great shape but has a problem the owner can't figure out. It will start and run but then randomly won't start. He replace the glowplugs, controller, fuel pump and maybe even the injection pump. Do you have any suggestions or things I should look at? He thought it acted like it just wasn't getting fuel, how do you check that other than cracking a line? I was thinking maybe it is sucking air someplace and is causing the problems.

I'd say you are on the right track. Look for cracked or worn fuel lines, both hard and rubber. Also check the lift pump for proper operation

If the truck does run but you notice a big lack of power and it stalls,it could be the injection pump.
Also check the return line.If it is plugged it will stall.

Check the fuel filter on the fire wall. If he has the square one check the fuel pressure switch coming out of the driver side of the fuel filter holder. The "o" ring holding this in, will deteriorate over time and will leak air past it.

so I guess I bought the truck. The specifics are that cold it will run and start fine. Power is good and mpg is good. He told me when it does it is if he would go in the gas station and let it sit while he was talking 15-30 min. Then it would not start till it cools off.

He has replaced
The injectors
Injection pump
Lift pump (once with a mech then with a electric)
Glow plug controller
All the Glow plugs

injection pump. If you want to make it work till you can get an IP on it, you run 12v to the cold advance sol. on the IP during cranking and it will start up just fine.

also pay attention to the cranking speed hot. They take a pretty quick turn even hot.

I had a 82 that did the exact same thing and was told after having a fuel presure test dont that it was the IP. Lucky for me it was a 5 speed and I always parked on a hill.......dump the clutch and she would fire right up. Cold starts were fine but once to operating temp it wasnt gonna happen with the starter. I never replaced the pump before I sold it but with the person that told me it was the pump I have no doubt. Good Luck

Did you call Hillbill"s?

Martin

No, once it is sitting in the driveway I will.

I also ordered a 6.5 starter and bracket assuming that it won't hurt to have a better starter. Could it just be starter heat soak causing the issue?

if it is cranking slowly, it very well could be the starter causing the no start.

the no start after heat soak is very common of these injection pumps.

Not to say it isn't a bum new injection pump but when I say he replaced it I mean less than 1000 miles ago. He bought it and put about 5k miles on it trying to figure it out then just didn't have anymore time. He is a dirt pusher and is super busy most of the time.

I have been having more problems with rebuilt pumps these days, because the part that wears and causes the heat soak issue is not replaced during a rebuild.

A new head and rotor (the part that wears creating the problem) adds several hundred to the cost of a rebuild.

it isnt all that difficult to replace the h&r, the problem comes when it is time to calibrate the thing. It can be done on-car, but gauges and some specialized adapters are needed.

Is that thing turboed?

No not at the moment. I want to get it to run right, do basic impovement (tires, radio fix odds and ends) then consider it. If I could find a cheap one it may happen sooner.

I ordered one of the new rotors and heads off ebay and I am having one of my buddies that teaches at a community college replace it on my pump just incase. Now if it would just rain so I can get it.

Well just incase someone needs this thread for trouble shooting I finally went and got the truck and found the timing was retarded on the pump approx 1/16 of an inch or more. so far it starts great. I need to get better tires on it and start driving it to test it.
