Does it make you uncomfortable to use high rpms for highway hill climbs? If I down shift into 3rd gear from 4th at 55 MPH to maintain my speed, I'll be turning 3300 rpms. Now I know it's governed to 3600 rpms... but the loudness of that engine spinning those rpms for an extended hill climb tends to unnerve me. Should I get over myself and realize the engine is designed to run up to 3600 rpms? Thanks! :)
 
i assume sm465? i generally just go as fast as i can before the hill and stay in 4th until 50 or so, then shift to 3rd and cruise at 45... 3300rpm makes for some awful fuel economy.

i would kill to have a gear between 3rd and 4th... time for a ranger overdrive so i can split gears.
 
My 6.2L spends most of it's time at over 3000 rpm under 7psi of boost at wide open throttle when I am doing A hill climb or going through a mud hole and she hasn't let go, I think yours will be fine with 3300 rpm on a hill
 
I drove mine 4 hours floored coming home from a wheeling trip. Had to be pushing it close to the governed rpm the whole time. I know it would hit the governed speed every once in awhile going down hill.


I have yet to have a problem with the motor. Hell I even got 18 mpg on that trip.

Ok, I'll just put some ear plugs in for my upcoming road trip and kick her down to 3rd for the big hills. None are over a mile long, so it's not that big of a deal. The racket just makes me uncomfortable! :)

I would kill for a gear between 2 and 3 also. ;)
 
I drove mine all the way to Moab and back revving at 2700 rpm...

It'll be fine pulling a hill at 3300 rpm.

I only drove it 50 miles, the day I brought it home. Its been tore apart since, but Ive got OD trans, 3:08 gears and 31" tires, mine didnt rev very high at all doing 55-65.

nope. :D

You're only spinning 1285 rpm at 55 mph. Hell, you could do 55 mph in second gear! I'm just a hair under 2000 rpm at 55 mph in my top gear (no over drive though). I could use some lower axle gearing and an overdrive... :thinking:
 
Dont even have a chance to have this problem. Living in MI... there are no hills.

That being said, I try to treat the 6.2s nice in the hopes they will live a long time.

The guys on SteelSoldiers talk like if you drive them at 70mph for more than 30 seconds there will be catastrophic failures.:rolleyes:

Hell I drove mine from chicago to St. Louis at 75mph most of the way and had no problems. Now I got 37s on it, same gears (3.08s) and it cruises 65 quite nicely. Takes forever to get there though :rolleyes:
 
Oh it will do it... I am just curios as the life of the motor when run at 75mph all day all the time.
They were designed in the 80s... lower speeds.

But, the same can be said about almost any engine from the 80s.

I dont think there is a problem.
 
the idea of running an engine at 70 mph is sort of ill-informed. You could run an engine at 70 miles an hour and 1000 rpm with the right gearing, or you could be screaming 3600 rpm at 70 miles an hour. So, the question of MPH is irrelevant.

With that said, I imagine most those guys on steel soldiers have 4.56 gearing, which with a TH400 and 31" tires - you couldn't run 70 mph because that's slightly over the rpm governor. So their perspective is likely different from someone who can capably drive 70 mph at a reasonable RPM.

Even with the M1009s they still have this attitude. Not saying I believe in this... but that seems to be the consensus there.
 
that's because an M1009 is geared so poorly, they only dream of getting to 70MPH. They're just jealous. :D
 
As for the toughness of these engines, I had a K10 with 3.08s and 35" boggers with a slip camper in the back for hunting season. I was able to just hit about 65mph in 4th gear (NV3500 / NP241) fifth was totally useless. To maintain that speed, I had to keep the pedal floored for the whole 2hr trip. The engine was blowing black smoke constantly and running about 950 - 1000F for the EGT (N/A engine). She not only put up with it, but still got 18mpg on that trip.

That engine lasted until the crack between the rearmost valves in one head started to leak and that cylinder quit firing at idle / when cold causing a bunch of blue smoke that was choking my wheeling buddies on the trail. I later installed fresh heads and that engine is still living a hard life in a buddy's wheeling rig.

These are tough engines, and hold up well if you keep the oil and coolant temps in check, along with proper maintenance. Gotta keep the filters fresh, oil clean and balancer solid and they'll go a long time even under harsh circumstances
