6.2 stalling problem

I just rebuilt my heads on my 6.2. The glow plug controller seems not to work so I jumper the glow plugs for about 10-15 seconds, then jump in the cab to start. That part works fine.

But when I am going down the road (so far just short trips) the engine dies as I coast (like approaching a stop sign). I have put the jimmy in park to be able to cycle the key in the ignition (does not work in neutral). Once stopped and in park I can restart the engine fine.

I suspect its because the glow plug controller in not working, but I found I can keep the engine going with by two footing it (one on brake, the other on the accelerator) while coasting and stopping. This made me think that the rpm might be a tinge low (below 650 rpm)

How do I adjust rpm on a 6.2 and how do you get a rpm reading off a glow plug system

You need a diesel tach to get an RPM reading... it won't come from the glow plug system. My guess is your high idle circuit is not functional though. Will it stay running after it warms up? Should only take a couple minutes of idling to warm up and come off of high idle.

It would also be wise to bring it into a diesel mechanic and pay to have the timing and idle speed set. They will have the tools needed to do that.

The glow plugs are only a starting aid...not an ignition system.

My 6.2 will run at under 500 rpm under load, if I try and pull it down any further (manual tranny) it'll just add fuel.

Check your fuel delivery (lift pump). Check for slightly loose fuel lines too, as a slightly loose one can allow air to be drawn into the fuel system. This can cause all sorts of weird running and stalling issues.
