my 85 6.2 w/ats turbo starts great, runs good, new fuel filter and air filter, but sometimes when you quickly hit the gas and let off it will stall. is this normal or the begining of more problems? it seems to do it more when it hasnt fully reached operating temps. could my fuel be turned up too much?
thanks in advance. im kinda new to the diesels

Go post it in the GM diesel forum, it's a couple of forums down from the garage.
You will get more questions and more answers on it there.

I am still trying to start mine, I bought it not running with the ATS turbo, so when it runs does it run good?

yeah it runs great. i had it loaded for a camping trip and was still getting nearly 17 mpg. but i just moved out of state and i miss my truck. so i want to make sure it doesnt have any problems before i drive it 700 miles to my new home

I had 2 suburbans, one with the banks running, it ran great and got 20mpg, but sold it to get some cash I needed, and now I need to getthis one running.
If the ATS is good enough to get me better than non turbo 6.2 and get me at least 17mpg then it's good.
I should work on it this week end.
In the mean time go post on the diesel forum and we can continue diagnosing your engine problems there.
:D

no membership  so it wont let me post there.
one more thing ive noticed, when i take the airfilter off right after it has been running there is a light smoke rising out of the intake. im hoping its nothing to worry about. but my guess is a little bit of blow by?

Ok let's see here if I can work with you on this:
Does it smoke much when you first start it in the cold, and how much does it take to start when cold.
If the smoke persists for a while (more than 30 sec) then you might need to rebuild the injectors, they tend to start leaking instead of spraying and you could end up with those problems.

my block heater was broken and that made it really hard to start in the cold so im not really sure how much it smoked because of that. but smoke out of the exhaust immediately goes away after it is running. the smoke im worried about comes from where the oil return for the turbo goes back into the valve cover, and it also comes through the vent that comes off the oil fill tube. its just a very light smoke and im not sure if its something i should be worried about

I believe that is blow by, and that will affect the way it runs, I know it builds up pressure in the crank case and if it doesn't vent somehwere it could push more oil past the rigns and might end up running on you.

it is vented back into the intake just before the turbo, but how much blowby is acceptable? it doesnt go through oil other than the little that it leaks. but it doenst burn any

That oil vapour sounds normal to me. I've got a freshly rebuilt 6.2L that has plenty of that vapour being fed back into the engine all the time.

As far as the stalling goes, I have an idea for you to check on. On the side of the injection pump hidden behind the TPS (throttle position sensor used by the transmission) on the passenger side of the engine is a lever. Sometimes those levers get sticky and don't return right away, which can cause the engine to stall out.

With the engine off, actuate that little lever and see if it returns right away or if it sticks for a second / indefinitely.
