Anyone still have one of these? Looks like those silly infomercial things. I wondered if it was aftermarket cause it said 'made in canada' on it, but googled some pics and saw a bunch.

Think it's fine, or junk? Restricting airflow? Take it off and just run a tube to the grill? I dunno.

Before I took it off today I thought it was hollow. There's a dump valve on the side so I thought it was just there to catch crap. I understand the reasoning behind the turbine thing. But in my mind I just see a big restriction. Then again I'm sure the engineers of the 6.x series know a bit more than I do :D

Looks like some cheap ass's idea for a turbo... I have had a lot of 6.2L powered GM's over the years (and twice as many parts trucks) and never come across anything like that.

I only even bother to ask because my 6.2 is starting to smell a bit rich. I put in a brand new air filter a month ago to see if that'd help. Only benefit I saw was it seems to be pulling less oil from the CDR valve, which is nice.

When I stop on it, intermittently I'll get that huge WHOOOOOOOOOOMP WOT feeling, but not always. Could very well be the 3.08 gears which is max for stock tires, let alone the 33s I have now. Not blowing any black smoke, so I'm not concerned on being too rich. But there is that smell, even though its not bad.

I just have that gotta fix every little thing problem where it's hard for me to leave things alone. It starts great, runs great, idles, accellerates all just fine, and it has 112k or so miles on it. I just gotta learn to leave well enough alone I guess. :D

I dunno what that is but throw it away and just run a tube to the core support.

Whatever it is it's not supposed to be there. GM didn't put it there.

Neither of my two 6.2's had that thing on them,my '85 Suburban does have a similar looking thing between the duct pipe to the grille opening, and air cleaner housing though...
I think its some kind of silencer to reduce intake noise...my pickup just has the air cleaner housing, someone deleted the wrinkled plastic duct I guess...it is noticeable noisier than the Suburban under acceleration, but I rather enjoy the noise...:D..I've seen quite a few other 6.2's and dont recall seeing a thing like that one them, maybe that was a military only thing that was part of a snorkel setup or something...:dunno:

CUCV's didn't a have snorkle at all.

Didn't even have the knock outs in the core support removed.

I dunno what it is. But I did see the exact same thing in some pictures I googled looking for it.

Either way I think here in the next few days I'ma grab a bit of ducting and go straight from the filter box to grill. Just gotta find something rigid enough so it doesn't sag in the middle. Don't wanna use dryer alum ducting. Maybe some kinda plastic tubing stuff like in the RV section.

Junkyard, find something that works. Think I used one off a 90's square body Dakota with a V8.

To put some info out there, got a PM from someone who couldn't post up cause they're not a paid member. Always forget that some sections aren't available for non-members to post.

That tubing is somewhat of a silencer . I have 2 0f those setups , they are off 86 C30 trucks with the J code 6.2 . The other ones are the plastic oval type that mounts on a bracket on the right side of the engine . Mine have brackets that bolt to the inner fender and support the aluminum housing . The rubber piece is called an evacuator . See them on diesel air filter housing . I do have GM parts books and found them there also . I don't have full membership , that's why the PM .

It's an air intake silencer.....basically a muffler for the air intake to reduce noise. My '90 had a very similar looking thing on the air intake years ago.

A quick hijack but.. My cucv does not have the tube going to the grill. Just the filer case with an open tube. Does cold air help with mileage like gas motors or do diesels not care? Im going to go with they help mileage, but I really dont want to go hunting if its not a big deal.

Good question!..I cant say if adding more cold air will improve or decrease a disel engines efficiency...

I'd guess it would reduce it some, since they rely on the heat produced by compression to fire the air/fuel mix instead of a spark like a gas engine..

I would think the more heat the more effeciecnt a diesel would burn the fuel...to a point though, where combustion temps got too high and possibly do some damage to a valve or piston...(unlikely that you could make it get that hot just by adding or removing the air intake dewhicky probably!)..

I put a oem-ish setup on Big Ugly and noticed an immediate "seat of the pants" power bump. Maybe 5hp but it was definately breathing a little better.

That engine's gunna combust under hood temp or cool air just fine.

'Cold Air' theoretically should help, it's denser, you're getting more air per volume. Turbo diesels like intercoolers.

How much is it going to help? We all have our opinions. Mine is so small it'd only be worthwhile doing it because you want to. Like as far as my OP, this silencer IMO is a restriction. Will a straight pipe make a difference? Perhaps, it'll be up to me to decide if it actually makes any difference, or placebo. But either way I'm doing it cause it's something to putz with :waytogo:

Does your CUCV blow any black smoke at all? If it does, running a pipe to the grill for fresh cool air should help with that, therefore increasing air to fuel, and getting better MPG, how much better... you'd have to record. >1 most likely, but $5 for pipe, and over the course of a few fill ups, sure why not? I would.

Mine never made better mpg (then again it was a M1008 on 36's and then 38's) but there was definately an increase in power. Held a hill I ised to drive up after work better. Never wanted to downshift to 2nd anymore.

I've read that gas engines are most efficient at high temps as far as economy...probably why they run them so lean nowadays and use higher temp thermostats to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy--but to gain the most power, cooler intake air does allow for a denser fuel mixture which will make more power...guess diesels are probably the same?..

Only seat of the pants improvement I felt on my 6.2 was after I installed a new air filter...despite the old one looking clean,it did make a noticeable difference...not a huge one,but noticeable...if I put the j code intake I have for it on I'd probably notice a big difference, but I've balked at doing it because the injector pipes will break when I go to remove them, they are really crusty--I have good used ones to replace them with, but I figure I may as well get every last mile out of the existing ones...

Yup with our 6.2s its more about reliability and keeping it running huh :D
