I have this 79 GMC K30 with a 350 and I want to swap it to a diesel. I found an 87 GMC K20 Suburban with a 700R4 and a 6.2 under the hood. It also has A/C (which I wanted).

How unhappy will I be with the 700R4?

Do you think it will be an issue if it's not a J code?

A properly working 700r4 is a huge improvement in regards to drivability, especially with a 6.2. It has a much lower 1st gear plus an OD as compared to a TH350 or 400.

It's pretty easy to swap in a J-code intake and turn up the pump a little.

Thanks for the reply! According to the VIN it has the j-code, so that's cool. I've got some more diagnostics to do before I plan too much. It's not starting for me yet...

Are the 700r4s in these trucks computer controlled?

I wouldn't have thought so, someone at work was trying to convince me there was no such thing as a manual valve body. Thanks!

i have personaly put a 6.2 in my 79 k20 but im running a 400 for this reason i have turboed mine and added methenal injetion to mine. it puts ot to much tork and power for then the stock 700r4 can handle but over all it was a farely ease swop, there r a few things that r going to fight u tho. the radator is not ment to go on that core support, but with a little work u can make ur own mounts. the fan shrould may not work ether so i just set mine up with electric fans. other then that may be add a inch of body lift and evey thing should swop over fairly ease. if u have any other questions just drop me a pm and ill try to help u out.
