I have an m1009 Cucv right now, have had it for a while and was wondering if anybody here as done the swap before. I'd like to give it some more civilian luxuries like a/c and radio eventually. But I'd figure I'd start with the big stuff first.

So what's your question?

swap out the 6.2 diesel for what? A 350 or that 5.7 diesel that was a piece of garbage? If you are talking a SBC 350, forget all that old junk. IMHO, a 6.2 diesel is a better engine than any carbed 350, and if you are sure you want to get rid of the 6.2, just go with a newer LS based engine. They are worlds above any of the old stuff.

I was thinking a sbc350 only because I dont have loads of cash to blow on a new motor. Ive seen new crate ones for around 2k. Im just wanting to basically restore the body and interior with all new mechanical and electronic components.

You should be able to find a running 6.2 for under 500 bucks...they used them up until 1992 so there are still a few around..

It'll cost you more to swap a gas 350 into it in the long run, unless you find a complete donor truck for less that has every part it'll require to do the swap..it would be less work to swap a diesel in place of a gas engine actually...

I am tempted to buy a straight six to have for a "spare" motor, that will fit in all 3 of my GM vehicles, but only because I like the sixes and have all the parts to install one already..but the amount of labor it'll take and the money to buy the engine would probably be better off put into a newer less rusty truck than mine too..the fact I'm not physically fit as I used to be also is a discouragement..

I will likely have to "upgrade" someday into the computerized and emission tested era of trucks, but I'll not go easily without some kicking and screaming..I like things simple ,easy to work on,and cheap to repair and inspect!..

I agree it would probably cost less toj just buy a used 6.2 or even a parts truck. I want to make the m1009 a daily driver eventually so new would be preferred. But as mentioned before I might end up selling and buying a civilian blazer instead.

Would be my choice. Converting makes zero sense vs. buying as-is in the first place. The only time conversions make sense IMO is when the option was never there, like the LS-swaps.

The 6.2's are great on economy, that is their claim to fame IMO. ~25MPG is doable in some of the rigs, if that were coupled with a 31 gallon tank, you'd have some serious range over any gas rig.

If it runs and drives, sell it as is. Way too many people pay way too many dollars for military trucks. Cash it in and laugh all the way to the bank. They go buy a rig that has the options that you want. If you want >20MPG, a 6.2/6.5 truck is a pretty good choice. If you're just looking for luxuries, just grab any well-optioned rig.

I don't understand why you think you hafta ditch the diesel engine in order to have luxuries. Civilian trucks were all offered with similar or identical options packages, regardless of fuel type. Military trucks were all severely stripped-down models, so it's hard to find a worse starting point from that perspective. :dunno:

I think the main attraction to military vehicles here as far as GM's is due to the fact they are the last remaining "rust free" ones that have low miles and haven't been hacked up and lifted..
Most that get bought at auction are quickly re-sold at large profit on craigslist..quite a few buyers soon find out a diesel isn't their cup of tea,and the 24V electrical systems aren't "typical" and easy to fix or diagnose, nor cheap..many get gutted and gas engines installed..

The past month or so I've seen a true military Humvee all in camo driving by my house often...not sure I'd be willing to drive one of those as a daily driver--no roof, hard to park,etc..kind of impractical, but I guess it does have a degree of "Rambo" coolness to it..

If you are looking for luxuries and better daily driver comfort then do what is suggested above and get a different rig. I have a '90 K5 with the 6.2 diesel and Silverado package that I bought way back in '94 with low miles. It's a stripped down trail truck now but would love to have another one in stock configuration to daily drive. Cruise, AC, power windows, OD transmission, and it was very quiet inside with thick factory insulation and carpeting.

I think the long run you will have a LOT of work trying to convert the M1009 over to basically civilian specs, and the engine is really the least of the worries.
