well i've just about had it with this project so i figured id come here and ask for some help. im in the middle of swapping a sm465 into my blazer with a 6.2 and what i figured would be the easiest part is becoming the hardest.. i've got everything bolted in and ready to go except for the starter now. im sure the starter i have is correct for my application as i've gone through 3 now because none of them seemed to fit and the current one i have is an open faced one which i read some require for flywheel clearance. my sm465 came out of a 78 chevy pu and has a housing sorta deal where it covers where the nose cone of the starter goes. the trouble im running into is that in order for the bolt holes on the starter to line up id have to grind away this part of the sm465. however i ground the starter nose cone a tish an got it to fit snugly in the sm465 nose cone cover however now the bolt holes don't line up. just wondering if anyones run into this problem at all and if so what they did. any help would be great as im running out of ideas of what to do, im sure someones gotta know this swaps been done so many times. i can provide pics if anyone needs em too
thanks guys

This doesn't make sense...

im sure the starter i have is correct for my application as i've gone through 3 now because none of them seemed to fit

What application are you buying starters for?

by application i meant starters for a 6.2 with a sm465. im pretty sure ive got the right one now its just not fitting. i started grinding and its getting really close to fitting so i'll just keep at it i suppose. thanks guys

You should not have to grind anything... are you buying starters specifically for the 6.2L application? They are not the same starter as the 350 V8, actually about double the size for turning over a motor with high compression. But they are all the same as far as nose cones go (between the 6.2L's).

I put a stock 1984 6.2L and starter into my '79 K10 with a stock mechanical bellhousing with no grinding.

yea im sure its correct cuz its about twice the size of a v8 starter and weighs a ton. maybe just because its an after market high torque one its got some fitment issues, im about ready to pop it in and see if it fits again. now im just hoping it wont need any shimming after i get it to fit

well i finally ground enough off to get it to fit, its not so pretty lookin anymore but hey nothin on my truck is haha. anywho its been sitting so long i gotta let the batteries charge up so we'll see whats goin on tomorrow
