Can't get my truck to start or run anymore.

It ran a week ago, was hard to start, stalled while idling, particularly when coming off throttle. Has had these driveability issues for 3+ months, slowly getting worse and worse.

Sat for a week due to my ineptitude at finding a bad ground wire to the batteries. Got that fixed. Won't start.

Drain the fuel from the filter, find about 1/2 cup of water (this probably isnt a good sign). Proceeded to pull 1 gallon out of fuel tank (using stock fuel pickup and line), no sign of any more water.

disconnect fuel solenoid, crank engine for total of 60 seconds, in 15 seconds tries, 2 minutes apart. Crack air bleed on filter, fuel spurts out with good pressure. crank one more time for 15 seconds.

crack all 8 injector lines, connect fuel solenoid. crank engine for total 60 seconds in 15 second bursts. 6 of 8 injector lines show fuel. Completely disconnect two dry lines, crank for 15 seconds, wait, and 15 seconds. still no fuel at all. Tighten 6 wet lines, hoping the dry two will prime once the engine is running.

Glowplugs on 8 seconds, crank 15 seconds at 1/2 throttle. wait 2 minutes, repeat 5 times, NOTHING.

No smoke of any kind, no white, no black, no gray. Does not sound like it's trying. Pour about a table spoon of diesel directly into intake, have into each side, no change.

I'm thinking the IP was dying, then sitting for a week with some amount of water in the fuel through a half dozen freeze/thaws finished it off. Any other ways to see if the IP is toast before I go dropping $300 to find out its something else?

Thanks.

Answer to a question that was asked of me... Fuel shutoff solenoid does NOT make a noticeable click when 12v is applied. So thats the first suspect. Now where do I get one of those?

If you've got fuel dribbling out of several injection lines when cranking, I'd suspect that your fuel cutoff solenoid is working alright. Could be possible that your IP isn't supplying enough fuel pressure to make the injectors pop anymore, that would explain the complete lack of smoke whilst still providing fuel in the form of a dribble out of the injectors.

If you have no smoke then enough fuel isn't getting through . If you have water in your fuel I suspect the IP is toast . Pouring fuel down the intake doesn't do any good because it has to sprayed into the cylinder at the right time . You can use starting spray but disconnect your glow plugs first !!!!!

Could be the water in the fuel damaged the injector nozzles too...causing droplets rather than mist.

What is the ambient temp during all of this?

While trying to start, about 70... during the 1-2 weeks the truck sat, anywhere from 25 to 85. There was definitely some amount of water in the fuel.

I ordered a new IP. a NOS IP listed for a 92-93 6.2 truck (so it'll have slightly more aggressive fueling), $200 delivered. I could not find a new or rebuilt IP for less than $300 anywhere else.

That's a great price! I would do injectors while you're at it though...

I got mine through www.accuratediesel.com and they were very helpful, and the price was awesome.

Truck ran about 75% better with the new IP. started to take the old IP apart, the main casting was cracking a couple places. I'm guessing there was enough water in the fuel that when it froze overnight, the water expanded and cracked the casting. Dumped the entire tank of fuel (donated it to the complex's diesel tractor, told them first). Still didn't run perfect.

Changed fuel filters, because the fuel coming OUT of the filter didnt look that great. Runs like a brand new truck now. Cut the old filter apart, there wasn't liquid diesel in it, there was something that looked like half melted butter. Now I'm really glad I dumped that tank of fuel. was $100 to fill it, but it already cost me $250 in repairs, I'll gladly dump $100 in fuel to not have to do that all over again.

Definately need to turn this pump up though. NO black smoke at WOT at all, truck has no wheaties. Should have turned it up before even putting it in! =)

I almost killed myself doing it. Keep in mind my truck ahs 42" tires and about 5" of lift, so no inner fenders. I'm standing on the leaf spring working on the engine, start to climb out. Something slipped, and when I stopped falling, one foot was on the ground, one was on top of the rad support, I had one arm over the engine, one around the tire in a bearhug, and a u-bolt trying to enter my backside. I'm black and blue from the waist to the knees, I can barely walk, and can't even pick up my 40lbs dog because of my arms & back.

Moral of the story... be more careful next time I guess. that HURT.

I did that recently too... Crawling off the front of my truck when my boot on the bumper slipped off. That leg went down, but the other one got stuck on the rad support... Big time did the splits and nearly ate the dirt with a face plant...

Not fun, now I have a step that I use, lol
