Hey everyone, ive been toying with the idea of putting a turbo on the truck, and have pretty much decided that im gonna try to find a rebuilt 6.5L turbo instead of buying a complete brand new system from banks or somethin. The system would be nice, but i just cant swing the green.

my question is that ive been looking at the 6.5 turbos... and it looks like there are 8 different versions or something???? GM1, GM2, etc. etc.

I will do a search on the forum later today, as im on my way out the door, but does anyone know which "version" of the 6.5L turbo is easiest or the most effective to swap onto a stock 6.2L? and maybe what pitfalls im looking at with the install???

the only two things i know about already, is something about modding the "cooling" line, which i assume is the oil cooler line, which i also assume is to provide oil to the turbo, and that i should install an electric lift pump to provide more fuel to compliment the turbo.

Installation is the same for all (except the van version, the GM-6, which you don't want). You want the GM-8. That is the last version and has the most improvements.

You will need the oil cooler line, exhaust manifold, upper intake manifold and a few assorted parts. All these can be had off a 6.5TD.

You should look at upgrading your Injection Pump & fuel lines to the 6.5 as well if you want a boost in power.

Finally you should look into adding an intercooler. That's considered to be one of the major drawbacks or mistakes of GM. EGTs become a huge concern in a turboed diesel.
