6.2 What's it good for? Just about everything.

my 6.2 pisses me off sometimes but makes me smile when I start it.. Anyone else have this affliction?
It pisses me off Everytime I hit the gas from about 25 mph on up. Makes me grin when people tell me something must be wrong with my motor. Makes me grin Everytime I fill it up with fuel. Pisses me off Everytime I hit a hill.

I have a love hate relationship with my ( now multiple) 6.2s

Mine scares me on a cold start--the one in my pickup sounds like a stone crusher for a few minutes after it starts, the colder out it is,the longer it sounds like every part is 1/8" too small for their bores--one lifter or valve ticks for about 3-4 minutes too (the cylinder that had a glow plug get ingested long ago most likely ).....the warmer it gets after driven awhile, the quieter it gets..
The 6.2 in my Suburban sounds much quieter over all, especially when cold,in comparison..(and it has 155K on it )...supposedly the one in my pickup was a salvage yard one with "only" 80K on it...

Mine pisses me off when I'm forced to take off from a dead stop on a steep hill, between the high gearing and the TH400,it feels like it has 50 hp...it also never seems to idle smoothly for long,it tends to have a random misfire ,and at a long stop light that can get annoying..
Also just when it starts getting in its power band, the govenor kicks in..gets annoying having a 3600 rpm redline ,like a Briggs & Stratton lawn mower sometimes...

I'm not overly impressed with its fuel mileage either--I get between 15-17 mpg no matter what I do with the truck...a gas V8 can equal or better that nowadays...gas is cheaper still too..

Glow plugs seem to fail often or they rust away to a nub here in short order too,and they aren't exactly cheap--good luck getting swelled up originals out without breaking them too...they could have at least made them with 14mm threads like spark plugs..

One thing I do love about my 6.2 is the fact I can suffocate tailgaters by dropping it into second and flooring it...:D...and it does seem to attract a lot of interest for an old beater--I've had a lot of guys ask me "is that a factory diesel,or did you put a Cummins in it "...also had a few come over to me at the gas pumps and say "HEY--you know your putting DIESEL in it,right "?...and I say "I sure HOPE it's diesel fuel...it IS a diesel" !..and they look at me with a dropped jaw and say "huh--never knew they had diesels that far back"..

I can say this about my 6.2/6.5 collection , for a daily driver , mild towrig , or the type of wheeling I do up here ,I would never go back to a gasser .

That is my sentiment. I'm not a drag racer, so the slow takeoff speed doesn't bother me. Yes, a 454 is faster, but my fuel cost is half what they run, and overall I'm quite happy. If I ever do want more oomph I'll throw a turbine on it.

There are some neat modern engines, but I can't imagine a circumstance when I'd want to downgrade to a TBI 350 (for my purposes).

So I don't consider it an affliction, I'm genuinely happy with it. :thumb:

I agree with all sentiments above.. And I got stuck at the light at the bottom of the hill today.. Still maintained 45mph it's the little things..

I still love mine...even when it gives me grief. I have a new electric fuel pump, new fuel pump harness, and a (used) Banks turbo kit to install on it. This weekend would have been perfect for it, but it's been storming for 2 days and is suppose to again tomorrow...

If anyone has any reason to really desire these trucks with this engine, here is the sole reason. I drove about 80 miles from filling up at my house and down to get my load and back..

My contribution to the thread. Filled my 20-gallon tank up 154 miles ago. 80 or so of those miles involved taking a trailer to the dump (8840 pounds outbound, 7120 pounds on the return trip). Tank has much fuel left.

Fuel consumption is pretty good for a 33-year-old pickup. :thumb:

Haha that's pretty awesome! Ive been tracking mine and on the single 20 gallon tank which is close to empty now I am at 271 miles. Mixed driving and lots of wheeling, idling etc. changed the fuel filter.. so I guess It isn't a real representation. Ill track it on the next tank. I bet I could easy squeeze 300 miles from a single tank..

All my mpg figures I post I use a GPS for distance and I fill up the fuel all the way up the filler neck just so I can be sure I have put the exact same amount in.

That is what I do at each fill up,since my fuel gauge doesn't work, the sending unit is bad,it reads way over full all the time,so I write down the mileage on the corner of the windshield with a sharpie every time I top it of...usually I go 100 miles between fill ups,and I have never gotten more than 18 mpg,and usually get more like 14-16 mpg..takes between 6-7 gallons almost every time..

Back when I first got the truck in 2003 I squeezed 22 mpg out of it a few times..I think the 265-75-16's on it now killed a few mpg due to more drag, and raising the gearing higher,it seems to have pretty high gearing like 3:23's in it to start with, and taller tires bog it down more...its done better with smaller tires like 245-75-16's..
My injectors have never been touched by me,I'm sure they could use a good purge, but I dont like messing with things I will likely ruin or make worse, not better--if it aint broke, dont fix it--..truck starts and runs, thats all I care about..

Interesting. I would complain if I ever got less than 400 miles from a 20 gallon tank (in the step-side).

I'm simply replying to confirm my love for the 6.2L. Here's a photo from 10 years ago.

I'm almost done with that tank of fuel.

Bwahahaha. It's amazing how low the fuel consumption is when the truck is parked. I bought my CUCV in 2012 and have never had to add fuel.

:haha:
