Went to put starter on this week and get this thing runnging because its raining and I wanna play. Well the outer bolt hole for the starter is broke off the block. This can be fixed right? Just weld a block on and drill it and tap it?

Also what is the big satillate vacume lookin thing behind the intake were the dizzy should be? Its not pluged up to anything so can I take it off?

The critter behind your intake is your vacuum pump. It does not mind if nothing is hooked up to it, but it does need to be installed as it drives the oil pump similar to a gasoline engine. There are inserts available that drive the oil pump but do not have a vacuum pump installed on them.

The block in my truck also had a busted off ear for the starter on the block. I took my oxy-acetylene torch to it to pre-heat the area, welded some square stock on, then wrapped it with a heat blanket so it'd cool slowly. Seems to have worked, I didn't have any cracking going on around the weld on the block side of things. Make sure you install the proper starter brace, and it should be alright.

Thanks that's what I needed to know. I know the reason it broke is they didn't put it on. The block and sterter both were broke. Ill have to make or buy one as I did not get it with the truck.

As for the pump, do they make a kit to delete it or is it a you build it yourself kinda deal?

Look for a 1 ton HD truck with a manual tranny & a 6.2..it will likely have the shaft your looking for to replace the vacuum pump..if its not in the way of anything your adding, etc, you could just leave it be of course..I have a "junk" 87 6.2 with a busted crank out of a 1 ton ramp truck that has the "J" code intake (no EGR valve and larger air intake opening) and it had no vacuum pump,it had a 4 speed SM465 ..
A GM dealer can probably still get you the vacuum pump "delete" shaft if desired, and the freeze plug thing you'll need to cover up the hole in the intake..

I don't think that's anything like a freeze plug up top on that. I think it's a one piece deal...kind of like the bottom half of a distributor assembly. My 6.2 in the shed has the non vac pump set-up too. As far as I know any stock app with manual tranny and non AC will have that set-up. Mine came from a 3/4 ton pick-up originally.

Your probably right Rene--I haven't really looked closely at that parts engine I have,it appeared to be a freeze plug to me,but its probably like you said--I never took one of those OR a vaccuum pump out of a 6.2 yet,so I wouldn't know for sure.....most likely any truck with a 6.2 no A/C or cruise that has a manual tranny might have no vaccuum pump too,it wouldn't nessasarily need to be a 1 ton too...but almost every 1/2 and 3/4 ton diesel truck here I've seen has either A/C or cruise,or both,or a TH400 that needs the vacuum pump..the 1 tons tend to be bare bones "work" trucks with manual trannys more often..
