6.2L backed by an allison 5 or 6 speed

hmm.... heres a thought, the newer GM 6L50-E transmissions. they are available in an AWD setup, but its a longetudinal tranny, which would require a transfer case right?

they are rated for 332 ft lbs of torque, so my stock 6.2L would be well within the safty limits. and they are rated to a GVWR of 5000 lbs which is well above my K5. and on top of that, it has some rather attractive gearing, except that massive 1st to 2nd drop...

1 - 4.06
2 - 2.37
3 - 1.55
4 - 1.16
5 - 0.85
6 - 0.67
R - 3.20
assuming that a decent t-case could be mated up to this thing, even a chain driven case wouldnt be that bad for the power levels im lookin at. although a NP205 would be preferred ;)

be interesting to see if one of these could be put in as easily as a 4l80-E with just a stand alone computer or something.

maybe im just being a bit to much of a dreamer for wanting a 6 speed behind my 6.2L :(

someone would have to make a standalone first, then you'd have to find one of these brand new transmissions ;)

Don't need a standalone. Looks like the TCM is located in the pan. You probably have to pipe in a CAN network or tps/rpm/ect readings to get it to work.

Nah, they use them in the newer vetts I know for sure, other vehicles I am not sure, in the newer ls1 series anything(ls2,ls1,ls7,ls7,lq4,lq9 and whatever the 5.3 adn 4.8 are) both the controller for the tranny and for the engine is in 1 computer. Thats why there is aftermarket stand along controllers to eliminate the need for an engine controller because you cant have it any other way with the newer transmissions.
I am not sure if they have stand alone controllers for the 4l65e, but I know a friend who is the partial owner g-force motorsports in Friendswood, and their impala ss has a 454 CI LS1 that is running that transmission, but there car is a one off custom application. They might know who can get it done though.

the Allisons have seperate TCMs, to say that the 6L transmissions don't have a seperate TCM even though you don't know for certain is a mistake.

Yep, TCM in the pan. Read the description of the transmission:

six speed RWD / AWD, electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission with torque converter clutch. Clutch-to-clutch architecture, with integral Electro / Hydraulic Controls Module

Specs: (you need excel to view)

6L80

6L90

And, they have only been putting them in the vettes for the 06/07 model year. Completely different than the 4l60/65.
