Hi everybody. Received my Blazer '83 6.2D a few days ago.
This morning, I drove for the first time on the highway.
I already knew that it won't speed up as a Ferrari. But it was really really slow.
Max speed on flat sections: 65 mph
Maw speed on slighty sloping sections: 50 mph
Is it normal ? Or do you guys think my engine is a bit tired ?
If it's normal, what do you think about installing a turbo ?
Is it risky for the engine ? Will it shorten the life duration of the 6.2 ?
Will I gain a few mph ?
Would be great to be able to reach 65 mph on slightly sloping sections...
Thx by advance for your answer !
Apart that, what a pleasure to drive this Blazer !
:D
It's quite comfortable for a truck actually ! And people are very friendly looking at it ! Partly because these vehicles are very rare and exotic in France or Italy where I live.

Something is wrong if it max's out at 65 mph on flat highway. My 83 pick-up with a 6.2 pulled a 4000 lb travel trailer at 105 km/h easily. Without the trailer I've had it running a steady 135 km/h down the highway. I'd say it'd top out at about 145 or so (90mph or so)

:sign17:

Something is wrong. I have no issues going quite a bit faster than that on the highway. I do have issues going up steep hills, but it's directly related to my tire/gearing.

I would not spend the money to turbo 6.2 personally. Is it risky for the life of a 6.2 in general, if it was a new/rebuilt block, I wouldn't say so. An old tired 6.2, yes I would not do it. I don't see the point in the gains a turbo would do, for the price, for what I need. If price was no issue, then I would go ahead and buy a new/rebuilt 6.5td.

But simply if you find what is causing it to be sluggish, I think you would be satisfied with the power output of what a properly functioning 6.2 has to offer.

I built my own kit but even before that 70-80 wasn't a problem and I have 4.10s and no od.

What tire size and gearing do you have?

My truck behaves like that with 3.08s, 33s and a 4 inch lift. Without the lift and tires I was way faster.

i have a banks kit ,wouldn,t want too go back ! i install it in 2005 0r 2006 never had a problem ,took all my information on the diesel page. was my first member internet thing! went the hole shabang timing gears, girdle, arp studs bigger water pomp, serpintine belt ,3inch exhaust, 599 low milage engine. i had rebuilt the body a few years before . bought a travel trailer, burnt the transmission pulling trailer home. started upgrading after that ,it was my only vehicle, and no payments so didn,t mine investing. drove it up too 2011 when i bought a new sierra. now its just a toy. but it would go over 75 mph on level roads easly before the turbo install. fuel filter air filter ,maybe fuel pomp!

I agree with whats been said. Something is wrong with the motor. My truck with 35" tires and 4.56 gears will do 85 mph if I want it to.

Yes hills slow it down but on flat ground its not too bad

If that doesn't clear it up. go after the transfer pump.

Or before any of that. you need to make sure that you are getting full fuel position with the throttle peddle at the injection pump. meaning tach out the engine when you go WOT by hand at the injection pump directly. then compare it by pushing the throttle to the floor. if you have worn and mal adjusted linkage you will loose throttle just through mechanical losses. and that will directly relate to road speed.

either that or your not getting full fuel because of filters, or transfer pump. might be the injection pump itself, but I think its something else.

Ya that too. Had that very same thing happen. A guy can to me with a first gen dodge cummins truck. Just would not do do highway speed. Ran great and had good power. Just no top end. Turned out to be exactly that. Combination of the aftermarket floor mat and worn out throttle pivots.

A decent running 6.2 is capable of more speed than that. I bought a '90 model with 49k on the odometer back in 1994. I got a couple of speeding tickets with it including one on the freeway for doing around 75 mph...that was just cruising. It took a little bit of distance but would bury the 85 mph speedo.

Dirty fuel or air filters have a big impact on how these engines run.

As with any Diesel engine really. If the fuel filters plug, which they can almost anytime with bad fuel or algae or water and ice in winter. Exactly why I suggested that first. Then look at the other things I mentioned after that.

Used to have a Mercedes 300CD. Great little coupe and that thing could easily do 85mph with a tired motor. One time my daughter was home from college and wanted to go see a friend in upstate NY. It was about a 7hr drive from our home in the Cape Cod area of MA. She took my 300 and off she went. All went good until she went to drive home. She filled up in NY and headed home. By the time she had gotten within a half hour of home and the Braga bridge in Fall River she called me on the phone because she though the tranny had gone. She could barely get up the bridge, no exaggeration, and the car wouldn't do over 25-30 on the flat and level. Turns out what happened is typical of what I've found in upstate NY. BAD FUEL. The bad fuel clogged the filter and just wouldn't feed the engine enough fuel to go. Quick filter change had the car running great again.

Like everyone has said. Fuel filter first, lift pump second, linkage third, fourth the injection pump. If it starts up pretty good, idles well, I would think the IP is good. Of course there is the high speed part of the pump that could be bad but again, that's the last thing to worry about.
