6.2L fuel system purge/clean W/pics

You can fill up the filter and do this, but just remember that especially at idle only a small percentage of it actually goes through the injectors as most just goes back in the return line.

if you see i did this twice. the first time was equivilant to just filling the filter because i did not make use of the return line. its better than nothing, but i had much better results the second time around with all the plumbing.

I was curious as to why you skipped the lift pump? I am doing a purge at this very moment but I used the inlet of the lift pump rather than the ip pump. just wondering.

I just read this and like the idea. Being the lazy individual that I am could I just by 3 or so bottles of diesel kleen and pour them in one of my empty tanks and just run it till it runs out?

Ok I did it,definitely noticed a difference, put 2 of the bigger bottles in with maybe a gallon of what was in there. Just thought I would share.

Thanks for all the pics and terrific write-up. I bought what I needed today and will give this a go and let you all know how this worked for me.

Been coming back to this thread over and over and finally had the time to do it. I changed a few steps, I'm not sure how much it differs as I also have the earlier style spin on primary fuel filter/water seperator, and the secondary that is mounted behind and on the intake manifold. It appears from the pics in the write up that it's a CUCV. Same principle in my video can be done on any 6.2, only thing that differs is locations.

I thought the same as K10 KRAWLER did, why not just pull the cleaning agent directly through the lift pump, and return the excess through the return lines. Made it simple, re-route two hoses and done.

Enjoy! :D

I'll report my findings later as I still haven't finished connecting it back up and bled the system.

Update: So I bled it and took it out to fill up. Can't say I noticed a power increase, I probably wouldn't regardless with a 700r4/208/3.08/33s, I'm under geared. At higher rpms foot to the floor on a 55mph road was a whole lot better. Before it'd kinda sputter once the rpms got up there if I did that. It does idle and cruise more smoothly. Filled up the tank, put 20.4 gallons in, came out to 13.2mpg. Which isn't a lot, especially for a diesel, but that's all city driving, no highway, plus a day and a half of crawling at the park which I'm sure is really what contributed to the low mpg. Plus the filter(s) change, bleeding it, letting it idle. Last time I filled it up was a good 2 + weeks ago, I don't drive it that much. Wish I wrote down how many actual miles I drove, but my mpg app doesn't show old odometer readings. I'll post another update next time I fill up to see if there's a difference after the purge.

Update: Aug 4 - 16.9mpg city/rural type driving. Interested to see what HWY mileage will be, but I never drive anywhere far.

Posting this today, but haven't driven recently. My last fill up was 17.8mpg.

Tossing out a quick tip. When replacing either fuel filter, if you don't have clean fresh diesel on hand, or don't feel like getting any. While you're at the parts store buying the filter, pick up a bottle of diesel kleen, enough to fill the filter, that way when you change out filters, priming the system is much quicker and easier, and with much of the fuel going back into the return line anyway, now you're fuel tank has diesel kleen in it.

Plus if you had a jug of diesel, and you're topping off your fuel filter, you don't know if you have any dirt or debris in/on that jug. Pretty safe to assume a bottle of diesel additive doesn't have any.

On a related note why I'm posting this here. When I did my video write up, I only changed out my primary fuel/water separator which was filthy disgusting. Never 'got around' to doing my secondary. I think the purge dislodged a bunch of crud, and blocked up my secondary filter (which is good or bad depending). Either way, I'd do the purge, drive a tank, then change out both filters.
