Hey all, I was looking at a HMMWV take out motor online and the seller told me the block code was 509. I know the newer AMG block is 506, but could find nothing about a 509 block code. Any info is greatly appreciated. What are the other "good" codes to watch for besides the 506? Thanks Dave

599 blocks are what originally came in the mid 90's HMMV's. Better than some, but not as good as the current offering.

The seller emailed me back it is a 506 block. Got to love public schools......

Just being a 506 block doesn't necessarily mean it is an AMG block. GM's last block series were 506's also. Look for the International diamond in the valley.

I've been curious about that. Didn't AMG take over production for a couple years, then subcontract the casting to Navistar? Since the diamond is a Navistar logo, it's possible that a block could be an AMG block and not a Navistar casting? Or am I all mixed up about that?

AMG doesn't have a foundry and never cast any blocks. AMG's GEP plant assembles the engine, but the components are supplied from subcontractors. In the case of the block and heads, they had International (Navistar) do the foundry and machine work.
