6.5 Swap help

From what I know it will physically fit but the turbo will hit the ac box. It is more or less physically the same as a 6.2 but on the later 6.5s the turbo causes problems.

Might want to find an early 90s 6.2/6.5 with the mech IP vs the electronic one w/the PMD that you've got in your 97.
As said, if you want to keep the turbo you'll need to mod the a/c airbox. The one from an S10 can be grafted to fit with a bit of work. Thats what I ended up doing.

Not sure if anyone considers this good info, but you also have the option of running the 6.5 non-turbo (with a 6.2 pass. exhaust manifold and air cleaner) and avoiding the clearance issue. I, for the record, would rather lose A/C than the turbo, as the difference in driving is noticeable, but it's another option if you don't feel like grafting in a different A/C setup.

look for a turbo exhaust manifold for a 6.2...

I looked into this as I am in the SLOW process of putting a 6.5 turbo set-up on my 6.2. Although I am unwilling to spend this kind of money I am fabbing a box to keep the heater. I've already removed all of the AC mess from my suburban (also had rear AC, extra lines). Amazed at the amount of space to work on the passenger side of the engine now!!!

Were Banks kits offered by GM as an option, or are they all aftermarket addons?

I think they may have been offered as a dealer installed option, but I was not old enough to drive when these trucks were sold new. Banks is an aftermarket company.

My question is based upon this statement on the Banks website:

In 1989, GM selected Banks as the 6.2L factory-turbo option, and remained so until GM released their own 6.5L turbo-diesel.

I have not yet met a factory/dealer-installed Banks kit, but I figured they were prolly out there based on Banks' statement.

Another option is a turbocharger for a Hummer 6.5L diesel. It does require minor firewall mods but will let you keep your AC and eliminates the downpipe into frame clearance issue.

You need to be willing to modify your cab firewall first. If that doesn't scare you off, it looks like a better setup than what we normally see on trucks.
