Minor slotting of one of the holes on the forward torque strap is needed (the bent piece of angle iron between the end of the starter and the block). Other than that, bolt-on
Are all 6.5 starters the gear reduction starters?? And it the brace simply the correct brace for the gear reduction starter?? I'm thinking of putting this on my 6.2 and maybe some of the other parts for the time being.
I just traded some machine labor for a 97 or 98 6.5 TD with 121k on the colock and a blown head gasket.
The same gear reduction starter was also used on the later model 6.2's. My '90 came with one of these, and to verify it lists the exact same part number for the starter as any 6.5TD truck on any parts websites.
I went ahead with the older style starter. My originally had a gear reduction starter on it, but after driving a 6.2l with the old style I went with that (plus i had one lying around).
I noticed my '85 Suburban has a gear reduction starter ,someone must have swapped one into it before I got it..I cant see up where the brace bolts to the block so I dont even know if they put one on it..
I'm surprised I have not fried that starter yet,the engine starts VERY hard and I've had to crank the piss out of it for several minutes many times,or end up using starting fluid to get it to fire up...guess the faster cranking speed dont help this 6.2!--I think it needs a few more glow plugs and possibly a new harness for all 8 of them from the relay to the glow plugs, the original wires are 25 years old and feel like they ight be broke or corroded inside under the insulation...
I suppose I should make sure there IS a brace on the starter before I have problems,I see way too many 6.2's in the scrap piles with busted blocks where the starter USED to bolt on!.....
