Our 83 C30 one ton parts truck has a 6 digit odometer (reads 340,000 kilometers) The truck was/is a 6.2 diesel and is an 83. I thought the 6 digit odometers came out in 86 or 87? Is this a diesel thing?

It does not look like its ever been swapped. We removed it last night and every screw was in place and all the dust and junk looked undisturbed...

Trip meter?

Mines 5 digits and its an '87 or so. (trip meter, so its no older than '87 or '88)
Is it a KM/MPH difference maybe?

now that I think about it, could be a diesel thing too, not sure if I've got any diesel speedos left to check. One of our resident diesel K5 owners can probably tell us.

No trip meter. My old cluster was from an 84 or 85, it's in km/h and is only 5 digits... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe because of the metric odometer plus the diesel. 100,000 km's is only 62,100 miles and even a lousy diesel will do that easily. I just thought it was odd when I saw that.

My wifes 86 Mustang GT has a 6 digit odometer and so did my 88 GMC 1/2 ton pick-up (new body style).

My 83 K5 diesel only had 5. Must be a kilometer thing, I wouldn't understand. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I recently purchased a '84 M1009 CUCV and it has the 6 digit odometer in it???? I was wondering about this myself. It might be a diesel thing.

I think it's a diesel thing. Most 6.2 equipped trucks I've run across have a 6 digit odometer. Plus, if my elite math skills are serving me correctly, 100km is only like a shade more than 60,000 miles. I'd be surprised if petrol powered trucks didn't have 6 digit odometers that measured kilometers.

My 87C10 has a 5 digit odometer and it's got a 305. I figure it was probably 88 or more than likely 89 when they made the change. Perhaps someone with an 88 Blazer or Suburban will let us know?

New body style trucks had 6 digits with gas motors for '88. Not sure about the carryovers with the old body style.

My 90 has the 6 digit with trip, I think that was the first year for a gasser anyway.

I always though 89 was the first year, but probably just like everything else GM its probably mixed in over about 5 years

I had an '89 this year that still had the five digit with the trip, and I had a '90 that had the six digit with the trip meter, both looked to be original.
