So need a full float rear axle for my truck. Currently has the bombproof 14 bolt semi float. Axles are currently 3.73s, so want some 4.10s anyways. Truck will see mostly mud, but also whatever terrain is out there. Don't plan on rocks, there aren't any!!!!! I found all three in local yard, all need a little work, but kinda steering away from the 14 bolt. The way the bottom hangs so low, it gets hung up on everything. Yes I know that it can be trimmed, but don't really feel like doing all that, just for a couple of inches. Also looking for one with at least a posi. I know the 60 and 70 can get a T/L or P/L, but the 14ff only a Govlock, want something more predictable. Can't afford a Detroit right now.

as long as you know parts for a 14b (used or new on CList, Ebay, ect) are going to be cheaper than the other two choices

Other than that, I don't know anything about the 70. The 60 is beefy and comes with 35spline axles.

Rear 60s are 30 splines, but that's fine, only have small block w/4-speed and 38" boggers.

Other than the 88-up trucks, did GM use a 70 in SRW apps?? Yard had one, don't think it was a dually, the hubs didn't appear to be as wide/deep, and don't think it was the 3HD. It had no ribs or anything like that, which I thought the 3HDs did. I can probly get any axle for $100, guess just need to pick one and run it....

I opted out on the 14ff myself. I ended up with a sterling 10.25 and love it. I know some will say otherwise, but its beefy as hell and already came stock with 4.10s. I've given it some harsh treatment lately, but its tough. Aftermarket support is not as good as the 14ff, but theres still lockers and posi's avail for it. I was looking at dana 70s and 14ff for about 3-4 months and almost pulled the trigger on a 14ff, but then the sterling dropped in my lap and i havnt looked back.

14 bolt was GMs SRW rear axle. 70 can be found in Dodges in a SRW.

60HD (kind of rare) has the 35 spline axles, although most are 30 like you said. I have seen alot of those 30 spline 60s break. Enough that I can't recommend them for just about anyone.

I would get a 70 or a 14 bolt. Probably would depend on which one ended up cheaper.

just a quick question to those in the know

are the axle shafts same side to side on the 14ff?

The yard does have I think a couple the 60 HD out of GM RVs. But, they are a mile and a half wide, and don't think they come with a posi of some sort. Probly get the 14 bolt they have already out, laying on the ground. I think it has 4.10s already, I'm pretty sure the matching 44 was right next to it, and that had 4.10s, but I'd check anyways. I guess for now I can lincoln lock it, then when funds are there or get a smokin' deal on a Detroit. Meanwhile I can check 60 rears for a posi, since I already have the 35 spline side gears and a 60 front, just need to get some pieces and go thru it....really sucks not having a good paying job anymore....

I prefer a 70hd but for a srw application that's NOT going with more than 5.13's the choice is easy - 14 bolt.

yeah, don't need 5.13s!! Thought bout 4.56s cause I found a set on craigslist for reasonable price, but eventually the truck will get a big block if I keep it, so 4.10s would be fine. So far even with the 38s and 3.73 it's been OK....
