If you weld the caps to the ears it makes the cap a structural component. (not just little tack welds to keep the cap from spinning) But ya, replacing u-joints is pretty much out of the question, but they will last much longer if they are welded and serviced properly.
 
Basically what bgreen said. Especially with a Spicer shaft, the ears will deform slightly under heavy loads and let the caps spin. If everything is welded it helps keep it from doing this.
 
Hey There,

I used Spicer SPL-55-3x non greasable units. These u-joints are very stoudt and I'm sure will hold up to everything I can dish out! If you're lookin' to replace, I'd go with these!

No problem...I was glancing at your signature...your Blazer seems quite similar to my Ford....other than your hydro steering...and the obvious difference in wheelbase. :D
