Gentlemen

A couple years back I made the decision to go 64” springs on the back of my suburban.

I purchased new Tuff country ez ride springs. Part # 19390

I moved the front perches and utilized two previous bolt holes for alignment. They are mounted in the same place relative to each other.

The rear spring mounts were originally in the 52” position but I was not aware. Yet.

I used 4” ord flip kit for the spring mounts. I flipped them around to make them longer but after assembly they were two inches too close together. This caused the shackle angle to be vertical. I had to pause the project due to a move and a new toy car purchase.

I drove the truck to the new house a few miles away and parked it for a year. It all looked good except the shackle angle. I realized that the previous owner had used the 52” holes for the lift kit they used and I needed to locate the original rivets and pop them out.

I got the shackle hanger mounted in the right position and everything reassembled. It looked good until I pulled up the driveway. There was a pop and a subsequent drop in the driver rear. Getting back to flat ground it was obvious that it was way lower on that side. Additionally, the shackle angle was not nearly as steep on that side.

Visual inspection doesn’t indicate any issue other than the angle difference. I have to assume the spring is broken. The distance between hangers has been verified to be the same. The springs still have the shipping stickers on them.

Anything else to check before I remove this spring to separate the pack? Ever heard of a new spring breaking?

Anything that comes to mind that would have a slightly higher spring rate and readily available?

I plan to pull it off this weekend but thought I’d check before disassembly. This a first for me.

I have severely W'd a 63" spring in my Toyota without proper bump stops and a poorly trimmed pack. But that is from abuse in the rocks. The only time I've seen a leaf break is from over flexing and from what I've experienced it's at the eye end. Maybe you got a poorly constructed pack with sub par materials. Overtightened center bolt? Seems unlikely to snap going up the driveway.

Did you happen to torque the spring bolts before it was on the ground under the weight of the vehicle?

I did not. But I bought these “unused” from another project. And they held for the short ride and for a year of storage. I hadn’t thought of that, though.
